My daughter is having her 1st period. The blood is mostly brownish and is more on the sides of her pad than in the middle. Is this due to her hymen? Is it anything to be concerned about?

What can I do next?

She's ok...first periods are always kinda funny, then they become more predictable later. Mine were always brown the first few days and would become more red later. Good luck !

I rememeber my very first period at age 12 years old, and it was brownish too. I didn't know what it was at first until my mom told me it was my period. I knew about periods before I first started, but I thought it was supposed to be red. It could be that my body, and probably your daughter's too was just going through making "chemical" changes (I would not call it chemical, but I can't think of another word to use.) By the 2nd month of my period, it was red. I also think, like the others above, said it is probably the way the pad is formed and your daughter's movement that just happens to leak on that area. Every girl is different. You can always call the oby/gyn just to be sure.

Could it be just the way the pad is forming when she is moving around, etc?

If you are concerned, then call her physician or yours. Not sure how old she is but I started at age 10 but I do not remember having this particular issue. Every girl is different but again if you are concerned call your physician.

Congratulations!!! lol Since this is her first anything is possible. The hymen wouldn't cause a change in how it flows. It could just be the way the pad is sitting as she walks. The only thing that would be concerning is if she were bleeding extremely heavy and having to change pads more than 3 times an hour. Other than that.... she sounds fine!

If you have concerns though, you may want to take her in to the Gyn!

Good luck!

My daughter is 13 and has been on her cycle just over a year now (March). I had always prepped her to expect anything from red to brown depending on when it happened, etc.

As far as the location on the pad, that could very well be the placement.

When she started, I called my pedi (Dr. Nena Piga) just to make sure everything was ok and on the norm. Also, Dr. Piga (and her partners her daughter Naomi and Dr. Compote) are all fantastic with girls and explaining things the way mom can't seem to get across.

Just wait....summer is here, she will want a tampon soon.

Good luck!!

Every girl/woman's body is different and no period is the same. Make sure she's comfortable. "Arm" her with an ample supply of pads and good advice and then...

Take her out and celebrate. What an awesome event to have happen. A right of passage!!

When my daughter started, all of her friends celebrated with her. She was the "late" one of her group and she'd already gone through allot of "firsts" with her friends and they were very happy for her (misery loves company i guess...kidding)

I grabbed her best friend and pulled them both out of school and went to get nails done and to dinner. JUST THE GIRLS.

It's an awesome memory she'll have for the rest of her life.

for the record...her's were brown as well...and once she had her first one, it took 2 months or longer for her to start again. She's very athletic and active and her dr told me that can happen. If she's in pain or cramping and never starts, that's when I'd worry.

Congratulations to your daughter. Good luck.

Brown is totally normal. I remember having mine at age 13 and wasn't sure if it was my period since it was so dark and brown. The 1st is always brown. As far as where it is on her pad it might be how's she's sitting or how it's positioned.

Good Luck,
M.

You might want to do something special for her to celebrate that she is now a woman and that her role in life has made some significant changes. In many cultures young girls are given parties or initiation into "adult" society. I think perhaps it would be nice to honor her in some way.

I sort of wish I had done something unique since I think my daughter rather took the event as gross and a punishment. Only had one daughter so maybe I can convince them for my grand daughters.

Now she gets to have the honor of participating in the creation of another life. So special.
