I am planning my son's first birthday party (in a party room) and don't really know where to begin. What types of activities do I do? There will only be a few 1 yr olds and the rest will be adults. Should I have something (an area) set up for the babies? Any ideas will be appreciated.

Hi, I didn't have any specific activities for my daughter's party. It was outside and the babies just played with a few toys on a blanket in the grass. Does your party room have a hard linoleum floor? Maybe it would be a good idea to have some kind of mat for them to play on. And put down a few non-porous toys.
My other advice is to keep the party short - like two hours. And make sure your baby has been fed and had a nap. And bring a stroller or pack n play in case someone gets cranky and needs a nap. Have some finger foods for them too. Have fun!

MJ... if it is just a few 1 yr olds do not bother going to the trouble of trying to have activities for them! Remember it will already be overwhelming to them to be around a bunch of adults. I would definately set up an area though for them to safely play and make sure all breakables are put up or away from these curious cruisers! Make sure you have a camera ready for all the cute pics you will get of them fighting over toys and each others attention! Good luck and many blessings to you and the Birthday Boy!

I just had a party for my twin girls 1st birthday. I had it at my house and had about 25 people (16 adults and 9 children). I kept it short, about 2 hours but if it's not at home you might want to keep it even shorter (1 1/2 hrs). I had a play area set up for the babies. I had a bin of toys that they could all share and then one large kind of infant play gym. I also had some age appropriate toys for the older kids. This was all in the basement so there was lots of room to run around. I had plenty of food and drinks for the adults (this will of course depend on the time of day). And then of course cake (small baby cakes for the girls and a separate large cake for the rest). Anyways, I would suggest keeping it short and simple. I bought some cute decorations and balloons from the Party Store and just had beef sandwiches, pasta, and salad for dinner. From about 3:30 to 4 we greeted guests, from 4 to 4:30 we opened gifts 4:30 to 5 dinner, 5ish cake and then it was over. Just make sure your camera is ready to go (our battery was low and we had to borrow a camera from a friend!)and have fun!!!

Congratulations on the first birthday milestone! Very fun! Bright big balls or smaller 12" balls, a spacious room to move and cruise, maybe a few toys or enough push cars for all. Flat floors and surfaces where they can walk easily without tripping on carpets is something to look for. You don't want any toys that they can easily pass along germs - things that can be licked or chewed, probably even any stuffed animals. Place your balloons high enough so no child can get at them - consider helium milar balloons too, so you'll be less concerned with helium, latex balloon breakage. If you're just blowing them up, you'll be able to place those higher up. Play happy music and even maybe have a small mommy/baby dance at the end of the party. Plan some nice little appetizers & punch for the moms involved. You'll want to keep the activities easy because you never know how a 1 year old is going to respond to strangers (adults) or new children. Make sure your child is well rested and check for any food allergies from the other moms before serving any food. Have a great time!

For my first's first birthdays, the oldest child there was 3 and we didn't have anything special for them. We just made sure there was space for them to run around without getting trampled by everyone else. If the party room has an open corner, maybe you can put a few balls or other toys there.

I am a child development person so I love age appropriate parties that are fun for the kids. I am assuming this is inside. I would buy a bunch of inflatable balls and take a little air out so they don't bounce real far. Kids can pick them up easily and throw them which are skills they are working on. If there are some are walking they can throw them but they don't go far. Also blow bubbles. You can buy a bubblemaker that blows a lot at one time. Make sure the surface isn't slippery.Give each child a ball to take home. Have fun. A.
