I would make it make it a BBQ with friends/family and a cake to celebrate that he is a yr old , at this age they have no idea what is going on and why so much fuss is being made , also not really any games to play at this age either , chances are he will take a nap throughout the event anyway.

We just did a BBQ and cake with farm animals for decorations. There really are no games for that age, just family/friends visiting and having fun.

When our sons turned one, we had guests bring an item for a time capsule. We got an usual collect of things that the boys will appreciate when they turn 21. I also included a letter from myself in the capsule. Just make sure that folks put their names on it.

. I don't know of any games, but he might appreciate small representations of his favorite things. my son turns one in the middle of august and he like turtles so I am making a turtle cupcake cake. there are tons of websites online that show you how to make real cute (and easy!) animal cakes for first bdays

1 is still too young for games but there's a korean tradition that's a fun game that everyone can get involved in. you basically put out a few things like pencil, money, stethoscope, book, etc. (whatever you want) and depending on what your baby crawls to and picks, thats what his future is going to be. like pencil = he'll be a scholar. money = he'll be wealthy. stethoscope = be a doctor. etc. you can choose your items like a ball for athlete or anything you want. then have all your guests guess what he's going to pick and put a raffle ticket in the bucket that corresponds w. the item. so if ur baby picks the pencil, you pick a raffle ticket out of the bucket for pencil and the person who has the ticket you choose wins a small prize. hope that made sense. its fun! let me know if you need more details :)

We were successful with keeping my son's first pretty low-key. He was way overstimulated by having so many people around, and doing much more would have been a disaster, I think. The backyard barbecue is a great idea. One other thing that was cheap and easy is that we gave all of thew kiddie attendees a balloon to go home with. It was the perfect party favor. I got my decorations from http://www.1stwishes.com, and I went a little nuts and got a personalized banner. It made for great pictures! One other thing we did is we made a "smash cake" just for my son, so he could get his fingers in it and get all messy without grossing the other guests out. Good luck, and have fun!

He's too little for games, he won't understand decorations or the concept of a birthday, and 30 people will be pretty overwhelming for him. Be prepared for the likelihood that he will need some quiet time or a nap, and that he will have no interest in sitting around with a group while opening a lot of presents. Just make it more of a simple family gathering than anything else. I don't think kids really get the idea of birthdays until at least 3 or 4. Sometimes we adults exhaust ourselves planning a big thing and then we are disappointed when the kid is cranky and overtired!

There is a great salad you can make that keeps well - use cooked ramen noodles (2 packs - without the flavor packet) and a bag of broccoli slaw, some slivered green peppers (or any other color), a little oil & vinegar, slivered almonds, craisins, and sesame seeds, and anything else you want to put in. It keeps well because there is no mayonnaise. You can make it the day before and keep it refrigerated.

I had the same problem you did.... couldnt choose a theme.. I found www.birthdaydirect.com. They are very helpful, quick and have lots to choose from. I also made a DVD of her first year and plan to show it at the party. www.onetruemedia.com. I also had some 8x10's made and put them on scrapbook paper the same colors as her theme.. and plan to hang them around the house. I rented a jumper for toddlers perfect for ages 0-4. I know it seems like I am going all out.. but she is our miracle baby.. and my last one!

Happy Birthday to your little one!!!

Take lots of pictures! We did an Elmo cake and put my little angel in the highchair with a great big piece with plastic underneath. He made a mess and rubbed it all over himself. Then we realized he was allergic to the red dye in the icing! Pour little fella. Straight to the bathtub. I have time lapse pictures thanks to my nephew. Pictures of happy people singing, pretty cake in front of my boy, red icing all over my boy, red bumps all over my boy, horrified looks on peoples faces, my boy in the bathtub with the bathwater full of icing and him grinning through it all! Classic. Memorable. Good times.

Happy Birthday to your sweet boy!! When my son turned one I threw him a rubber duckie party since that is all he loved ; ) I used the sesame street splish splash cd & played freeze dance & musical chairs. I also had a bubble machine for the kids to play around. I had blue punch with a floating duckie & the cake was blue with white bubbles & a large rubber duckie in the corner too. It was really cute & everyone had a blast! Whatever you decide, have fun!!
