Hi Moms,
My 19 month old daughter has been on antibiotics for 5 days for an ear infection. The antibiotics are doing the job and she's shown a lot of improvement the last couple of days. My concern is her appetie, she's not had a real meal for 7 days, only a bit of food here and there. The fluids she is doing well on and I know she is hydrated, but how long is too long with this decreased appetite?? I will be calling her doctor in the morning to talk with the nurse about it, but I knew that a lot of mom's out there would probably have some advice. I'm concerned too, because she is complaining now of a headache and am not sure why because the congestion seems to have cleared from her nasal passages and is sleeping better now. I appreciate all your input!

What can I do next?

Hello. My youngest child suffered with chronic ear infections and now has tubes. She is also underweight and everytime she'd get an ear infection she'd end up losing more weight from not being able to eat. My ped's advice was only to keep her hydrated and just keep trying to offer solid foods that i knew she'd eat (like crackers or cheerio's) and not to worry. As for the headache, you can try some tylenol. But also call the dr if the headache persists even with the tylenol.

It is so hard when they cannot tell you what they are feeling and need. Offer anything healthy that they usually like. There are all natural fruit popcicles with natural sugars - could help with the headaches. Make slushies out of her favorite fruit. Offer something new - cinnamon toast or healty cookie - lots of good recipes out there - with whole wheat and fruits in them.
Good luck - ear infections are the worse - my one granddaughter went through a series of them - but then had no more! Lots of TLC.

I find when my kids are sick the last thing to come back is their appetite so I would give it more time.

The headache may be from low blood sugar since she hasn't been eating much. It's a tough situation since you're not very hungary when you have a headache. See if she will eat something like a smoothie - banana, yogurt, berries, milk. It could get some much needed protein and vitamins into her and help her headache. Keep up with whatever fluids she'll drink. Hope she feels better soon.
