Hi ladies.
So, for the past couple of days i've noticed that Devon has has a weird skin thing going on on the pads of his fingertips. The only thing I can liken it to, in order for you to have a mental picture, is when you've gotten crazy glue on your fingertips, and they get a look like clear, winkled skin with slight cuts/prints on them. It almost seems to me like you would have to scrape your fingertips against something for a while to get this look. I can't understand it or where it is coming from. He hasn't been introduced to any new chemicals that I know of. He isn't complaining or acting off or anything. I put bacitracin on them last night before bed...and looked pretty rough this morning. I asked the (wonderful and very knowledgable) ladies at daycare to take a look today and asked if he had been playing with glue or anything (no) lately. I got a call from the owner (she has twin girls there and she and I chat a lot about our kids) about a half hour ago saying that she took a look at the pads of his fingers and see what I'm talking about - and - in addition, she said that from the upper knuckle to the fingertip looks red. She said it's like when the blood rushes to a body part after you've been pressing on it. She (and the infant floor manager both said they've never seen that before).
She said he was acting totally normal (was reading a book in front of her) and no fever or pain and that I don't need to come get him or take him to the doc right away, but to call in later to check on him - and monitor tonight, and maybe drop by doc in the morning just to have them take a look (even if it's not red anymore, because those fingertip pads are odd).
Anyway - that's the deal - has ANYBODY else seen this weird fingertip pads abrasion/scratches/redness before????
Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

This could be quite a few things, and none of us can narrow it down for you. Take a look at the photo on this Mayo Clinic page and see if it looks a bit like what you're describing. If so, you'll see that there are a whole list of possible causes, some serious. You'll do well to have your son checked by a doctor.

Sorry I won't be able to give you great detail on this, but there was a mom who posted a similar question on here within the last couple weeks? She described her childs condition as looking as if his finger tips had been burned. They were scaly, peely, and smooth... she was adamant he hadn't burned himself, and seemed to be in no particular distress about it. I didn't read much of the responses, but I did read a little, and it seemed that some people were saying they also had this condition, and that it was normal. I don't remember if/what they said caused it, but you might be able to look back through the posts for the last few weeks (I know, that's a lot of searching), but you might find something on here. Or I'd google it, and see what you find. Good luck.

Do they look like blisters? And are they on his feet? Ask the DR. if it sounds like Coxsackie Virus? Although there usually is fever and sores in the mouth als but each child can produce it differently. Good luck.

I get that myself! My fingertips are sensitive to soap, hand-sanitizer, and random chemicals in lotions and household cleaners. Perhaps he touched a floor that had been mopped, someone holding him had skin wearing moisturizer or clothing that was washed with a certain detergent, or used a certain hand soap?
My fingers actually crack like chapped lips if I ignore it. Yuck, and ouch. I have to wear gloves to wash dishes, clean the bathtub, etc. No other part of my body is effected. My suggestion is a good thick cream, stay away from lotion. I like Eucerin or that baby eczema cream. It takes me a couple weeks to heal from one hand in dish soap water for 10 seconds. I kick myself sometimes for forgetting the gloves. If it does crack/bleed, I use Neosporin and a Bandaid overnight.
Ask the daycare if they are washing his hands or using hand-santizer. Perhaps a change of hand soap at home/daycare? Dial hand soap is the worst for me. Try something more mild.
I hope that helps!
