Can anyone tell me if a person is considered 18 at midnight on their birthday? A friends daughter's birthday is tomorrow and she wants to go out to a dance club tonight at midnight that you have to be 18 to get into. This is in New Jersey if that matters. I've googled it, and from what I can tell she will be considered 18. A group is going and friend doesn't want her daughter to be stuck sitting out in the car! Thank you!

What can I do next?

Call the club and ask. They are the ones who are either going to let her in or not, depending on their ID policy.

We did this with my daughter when she turned 21. We went to Coyote Ugly at 12:01 a.m. They tried to give us a bit of a hard time, but I said "hello, its August 22". He really couldn't argue.

I would call the club to find out.

I would have someone call the club and ask them directly. Although "legally" she may be 18 at 12:01 a.m., the club may have its own internal policy on this (they can do this as long as they are not breaking the law). Years ago, I cocktailed and bartended for extra money on the weekends - I also worked the door on occasion. We had an internal policy not to let 18 and 19 yr olds in on their birthday after midnight (this was when the drinking age was 18 and then 19). We always had drama with those kids and the owner just decided he wasn't going to do it anymore. He figured they could come back the next night. Obviously drinking isn't the issue in your friend's case, but the club still may have a policy.

Good luck!

Yep.
Far as I know, only dates (not hours) are listed on all IDs!
So at 12:01? She's in!

Yup. Some kids go to the bar at midnight on their 21st for their first drink.

Well, my oldest was considered 21 at midnight on his birthday, and was able to go to a bar with a couple of buddies, so I am assuming she would be considered 18 at midnight.

I would think at midnight she would be old enough to enter legally. But call the club to make certain. Let her do it, her first call about an adult activity.

When the clock strikes midnight the date changes...like at 12:00 am on Jan 1st is a new year from just one minute before.

You can always call the club to verify if it would make you feel better.

It is as soon as they turn 18 so yes. No one, not one, would look into the exact moment they turn 18

Heck, most birth certificates don't even list the time anymore.

Yes - I used to work at a club and we frequently had parties come in at midnight for someone turning 21. It would be the same at 18.

Legally, your age advances a year at midnight.

Yes, she should be allowed in because it's the date that matters.
At midnight it's a new date....the day of her birthday so she would just have to
go stand in line to have her ID checked right after midnight....not before.

Yes, as soon as the date on the calendar at a club (or anywhere else) is the same date as your birthday, that's it. So if you were born at 10 AM on July 24th, you're considered 18 at midnight as soon as it becomes July 24th. No one looks for your time of birth and you aren't expected to show a birth certificate. What it says on your license or state liquor ID card is what counts.
