Hi H.,
I LOVED my ob/gyn. He was awesome and I couldn't have been more pleased with him. The only thing I would change is the hospital. He ONLY goes to Kennestone. I had heard of good things about Kennestone (at least the OB floor) but I was VERY disappointed. Although most of the nurses were wonderful, I had two who were so amazingly rude I could not believe it. Sadly, the nurse who was with me for the actual delivery told me to disregard what my doctor had told me because he was a man and could understand what I was feeling. Kennestone does not have a specialty pediatric unit, and they do not have a regular nursery. When my first was born in another town, I wanted him in the room with me the whole time although the nurses encouraged me to allow him to spend a little time in the nursery so I could get some rest before going home. This was a wise suggestion that after I got home, I did regret I did not take. With my last one, born at Kennestone, I had a c-section and the pain was unbelieveable. Despite having presriptions for pain and sleep aid (which I normally would have been quite pleased to take) I went without either because there was no way I wanted my mind foggy from narcotics when I was primary care giver of my newborn. With no medication it was excruciatingly painful to move position or get up. As a result, my recovery was much slower than it should have been. Although my doctor had written orders to take my baby to the special care nursery, the nurses said they did not have a nursery for this. Now understand, I wanted my baby with me almost all of the time. I was only requesting 2-3 hours at night--I was refused. Finally, about 4 days after he was born, one compassionate nurse offered to take my baby to the nursery herself for a few hours so I could finally have something for pain. Her suggestion was exactly what I had requested of previous nurses but was refused. I was a new person after just a few hours. It was enough to allow me to get a restful sleep and turn as needed which is of huge importance when recovering from a c-section. If I became pregnant again, it would indeed be a dilemma because I loved my doctor so much, but I would absolutely NOT go back to Kennestone. I have many friends which live close by (In Kennesaw, Acworth, Marietta and Dallas) who chose Northside instead. Their experiences were so much better. Northside is right beside Scottish Rite, they have a full time functional regular nursery for newborns but also have in room care so it is your choice. I would never choose to put my baby in the nursery regularly, even after a c-section, but you have no way of knowing what the circumstances might be that make it desirable for brief periods. My doctor was James Sutherland (Kennestone OB/GYN) and if you decide you are sure you want to go to Kennestone, you won't find a better doctor, but I would talk to as many of your friends as possible and get opinions from people who have been to BOTH hospitals. You then might want to find one that goes to Northside.
