17 Month Old Will Only Eat Baby Food for Fruits and Veggies (Excluding Pckles?).

I need some ideas on how to make the transition from baby foods to table foods. I have tried (and failed) with hotdogs, mashed potatoes, cooked carrots, peas, corn, green beans, black beans, apple chunks, banana chunks, French toast, and a few other foods that I was eating at the time. She will eat anything dried and crunchy and two weeks ago she devoured a baby pickle. She has oat cereal (with soy milk)with cinnamon in the morning with a fruit baby food, 2-3 servings of baby food in the afternoon and rice cereal (also with spy milk) with another 1-2 servings of baby food for dinner. If I try to sneak something new in between bites or hide shredded meat in her rice, she immediately realizes and wont trust me enough to take another bite. Any suggestions?

Oh, yeah... she also has a rediculous allergy to cow's milk. She was breastfed exclusively until 5 1/2 months and is nursed still only at night. If given cow's milk or something with cow's milk in it (gerber graduates, the powdered cheese in the Kraft mac & cheese-even if cooked with soy milk, etc.) she will break out in hives starting at her mouth and has to be given a small dose of benadryl, otherwise her whole face will become covered in hives and she sneezes like crazy and can't stop rubbing her eyes.

What can I do next?

Dont worry I had one that did the same thing and I took him to the doctor several times. Now he is a thriving 15year old that eats me out of house and home he didnt like many fruits and vegies until much later in life. Babies at that age will pick one food and eat that each meal everyday, Mac and cheese was his meal of choice. As the doctor told me his body knows what it needs and as long as they are healthy just enjoy the time. It was great advice, he is a happy healthy young man and eats everything in sight now.

this may not be what you're looking for, but she is probably getting better nutrition from eating the baby food than what she will from table food. I vote for letting her keep eating what she likes. She's going to grow up and grow out of it in time. Keep offering her regular foods, but don't be discouraged and try to get her off baby food when there's no harm in keeping her on it.
I know kids who will eat only dry foods. Can't be wet. Some that won't eat anything brown. Every kid is different.
Try yogurt, avacados, mango, mandarin oranges. I also have a pickle lover that seems to be almost a vegetarian. He rarely eats any meat. Would rather have fresh fruit, some fresh veggies, beans, cucumbers and crackers. I can feed him a pear or an apple, but it can't be in chunks. I have to peel it and let him bite it. If it's cut it tastes different? haha kids are silly.
Oh... try giving her a baby spoon or baby fork and letting her feed herself the new foods.

Hi S.,

This may sound a little strange but each blood type has a number of foods that works best for them. If you think about it, the type of food we would have eaten 300 years ago was indigenous to the area which, would have been indigenous to our heritage. We live in a country that is truly a melting pot of cultures. I discovered this when I was trying to determine why one of my daughters was a salad eater and the other was a meat eater. If you know her blood type, you can google blood type diet. (If you don't know hers but know yours and your husbands you can make a good guess) There will be lists of foods and you may be able to find something that she really takes to.

All babies are picky to some point because they come into the world with only one food supply and it's the same at every meal. If this doesn't work, just be patient. She'll come around eventually because she'll be hungry :)

God bless and Merry Christmas!

When I started my kids on regular food, I would mix a spoonful into the baby food and slowly add more. My second child didn't want anything but baby food for quite awhile, and if I mixed too much regular food into the jar, he wouldn't eat it. I discovered that if I gave him food from my plate he would eat it, thinking it was a great treat. So for a little while I put his food on my plate and we shared the plate.

You are feeding her healthy, nutritious food. It's the stage of your life that you are in worrying about your baby. My sons are grown and have decided on their own to eat healthy. After all those years of my fretting over their eating habits.....So, I can look back and give you my experience: Quit the worry...enjoy your beautiful baby!
Also, the crunchy food may be giving her some teething relief. It hurts to cut a tooth...I used to put a clean, damp wash cloth in the freezer and let the babies gnaw on it. Better than a frozen bagel or "gel ring"...

She could be having issues with textures. My second and third child had issues with textures. Are you feeding baby food out of a jar? I would recommend grinding up your table food in a food mill or food processor and feed your baby that way. Slowly add textures to the ground up food but "hiding" it in the food but don't overwhelm her with the textures. It may take time...my youngest is 2 and sometimes still has trouble with things like meats that tend to be chewier or drier. Your daughter should be able to handle thick consistencies like oatmeal and stuff like pancakes cut small. Sometimes if you cut meats very small you can entice her to try it that way.

Hi S.

I never used jar baby food, but I did blenderize our food (without salt and seasonings of course). I offered him cheerios w/o the sugar kind, and when he was ready he took those. What was great about giving him food that I blenderized was that as he got older, I would leave it more chunky and of course he saw me eating the same food in it's original form. So, it wasn't a great shock to him to go to the original form when he was able.

I would eat tuna salad with crackers and he really wanted that, so I just gave him tuna (without all the crunchy stuff I add) and a cracker and he loved it.

Each child is different and I introduced items as he was ready. I know I've heard about some babies having trouble with texture, maybe this could be an issue for your baby.

I hope you find out the problem without making an issue over food. I will be praying for your situation.

Baby food from the store is a little bland. Maybe try to make your own baby food in the transition. The flavors of the new foods you're offering may be to strong. Ease her over with homemade baby food. Then you also know its fresh and organic (if you go that route). As she adjusts to the stronger flavor you can just leave it a little chunkier until she'll take whole pieces of veggies.
