16Month Old Breastfeeding and Nutrional Value?

My son breastfeeds once in the morning and once before bed and sometimes a random feed before a nap. i plan to wein him before or around 2. i am asking what people know about the nutritional value my son is receiving from my milk at this time. i have heard different things. some say the baby only gets nutrition up to age one. also, is his belly still getting full at times and would it effect how much food he may eat at a given time if he has breastfeed earlier? i have always produced a good amount of milk but of course as time goes on and he nurses less the milk supply gets smaller. thanks for any input. :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

so far great advice from all of you. i feel good about what i am doing and want to continue. i do give him goat milk with his evening meal but not as a "bottle before bed" kinda thing. i am glad to hear others support BF for more than 1 year. the bonding is special and i do feel like he is getting more than just comfort from it...so thanks!

recently my best friend took her son in who is... three months shy of his 2nd b'day. now she is giving him soy formula due to a milk allergy. breastfeeding was out when they though it was a million diff things. however, her do said that in his opinion, he thinks kids should be on formula/breastmilk longer. that the vitamins and nutrion given is way higher than cows milk.

and yes, it can mess with their appetite. if you are planning on weaning, i did just naps.... (which is what my best friend above is also doing with formula, he still can'd digets soy milk) and when you are ready and he is ready, you will know it. don't let anyone push either way

You should nurse until one of you doesn't want to :-) If you don't like doing it, stop. If he's not interested, stop. Otherwise, keep it up.

Breastfeeding can only add to the nutrition your child is getting. The idea that there is no nutritional value in breastmilk past age one is just silliness. Of course there is nutritional value in it... ITS MILK!!! A 16 month old doesn't eat nearly the ballanced diet that would be required to get all the nutrients he needs on his own. Sure, you could replace your milk with cows milk or formula, but that would just replace the needed nutrients he is getting from you.

One of the main reasons to continue breastfeeding is to facilitate the intense bonding time between mother and child, so it's really about what you and your baby want.

Go with your gut mama, and do what YOU think it best for your baby and for you.

Hope this helps,
T.

What he is getting from your breast milk is far better than cows milk or formula. I nursed my older daughter for 27 months. I plan on nursing my 16 month old daughter at least that long. At the very end, though, she was only nursing at night before bed. It was mainly just the comfort factor at that point.

Nurse him as long as you feel like it. He can certainly do without it at this age if you want to quit for any reason.
