16 Wk Old Prefers Standing to Laying or Sitting

My little girl turned 16 weeks yesterday. For the past two weeks she has preferred standing on her own two legs with just the slightest assistance from mom, to sitting or laying. I could go into detail, but no kidding the little wee one has not mastered holding anything, but is going straight to upright. It's making feeding and playing kind of difficult, because she seems to not want anything supporting or encumbering her from behind or around her -- i.e., doesn't like to be embraced from around while trying to play or feed. Plus, I can no longer prop her up to sit anywhere--boppy, bouncer, etc.--she either has a fit and goes ramrod straight, or actually power-lunges out of position. We will check with doc at 4-month appt to be sure standing isn't bad for her legs or hips. But for now, I'd like suggestions about seating arrangements -- what might allow her to sit up without alot of back and shoulder encumbrance, but also give her some support and a safety belt? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Great advice, thanks! I think I just needed a few experienced moms to dispel the vague concerns I'd heard about walkers and jumpers. First day in the exersaucer (stuffed with pillows), and she loves it.

I'd get her a walker that has the stops on it so when she is ready to walk you don't have to buy another thing.

Do you have a high chair where the back reclines? If you do, then you can recline the back,so it isn't against her, she can sit if she wants to, or relax and let the back support her. That way, you can strap her in, also, you can put toys on the tray for her, and she's up higher, and can watch to see what you are doing easier.

My little girl just turned 4 months old too (#3) and she also decided that standing is the greatest thing in the world right now. If you don't have an exersaucer already, now would be a good time to invest in one as long as she can hold her head up pretty good. It'll give her the much needed exercise for her legs and hips and prepare her for crawling, standing and walking in the coming months. Another thought too, your babygirl maybe having some pretty good growing pains and straightening out may feel pretty good. Think about how good it feels to you when you stretch in the morning. It's completely normal but do talk to your doc just in case. Good luck!

The only advice I can offer to give you a bit of a break is to get a walker or a stand and play station. My daughter was about 4 mos when she started in a walker. We got ours from a friend and have a have small house so she really couldn't go anywhere. It was a great help for me, but unforuntately she only got more mobile and was walking by 9 mos. I think if you any least get her on her tummy to work out the upper body she should be fine.

my daughter is about 5 months now(with a blanket to fill in space to support her torso)....but I have been putting her in the johnhy jump up for a few weeks...she like to push up to a standing position....standing is not going to hurt her legs or hips at all, she is just practicing and getting strong!! around 2 months all my kids can balance standing on our hands and they think it is great fun!! my older two both walked at 9 months. some kids are just more balanced & coordinated at a younger age, nothing bad about that.

Have you tried an exersaucer, you can prop her up in it slightly by putting blankets around her torso.

Hang in there.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. My daughter was like that too. She is now 27 and nothing bad happened to her legs. She was just extra strong and she was well balanced at a young age

maybe she has reflux, and laying or sitting is painful for her.

When your doctor says she's big enough, a jumparoo might be a lifesaver. My little one also liked being upright and watching the world go by (but she still had time to snuggle and eat). We also found if I held her and walked with her back to my stomach, it helped a bit. Good luck.

Get her an excersaucer. She can stand, they are adjustable to height, and they have all kinds of fun toys she can play with while in one.

She might like one of those saucers - the kind where she sits in the middle and there's fun stuff all around. She can push upright when she wants to but can also relax into more of a sitting position. My kids loved theirs.

You can get an exersaucer or a jumperoo. We had the rainforest jumperoo and Amelia loved to stand and jump in it.
