Hi Moms,

You are always so gracious with your advice and experience so I thought I would throw this out to learn if anyone has experienced this before. My son, 16 mths old, has 2 marks on his left ankle. It is on both sides, right under the ankle bone. The best way to describe it is like a "burn" mark because it is bright pink (there was no accident). They are about an inch long, 1/8" thick on either side but they are not symmetrical. They go away if you touch them and they can slightly be felt on top of the skin. I noticed it this past weekend and thought it was shoes/sock restriction but it has remained. He doesn't seem to be bothered by them and there are no bad effects, fever, etc. Just recently he touched them when I was bathing him so I took him to the doctor the next day. I don't know if they are starting to bother him or he was pointing to them because I have been paying close attention. Either way, the doctor is also perplexed. She thought it could be an internal injury and this was a bruise but it is on both sides?! She still took a CBC to check for infection, low platelets, etc but everything is A-OK per the test. He is a very strong, healthy child and I don't like being in the "wait and see mode" ;(

So moms- do you have any experiences to share or information to provide? I would really appreciate it.

What can I do next?

Check him at night, my son used to love to sleep with his foot between in the crib slats. He always worked out his foot himself, so if I hadnt checked on him at night, I may never have known. No matter how tightly I tucked the bumper he would manage to wriggle his foot under and poke it out the crib. Never had any kinds of marks, but I could see that maybe causing marks on both sides. Other than that, I'm baffled.

Hi C.T.,

My sister went through this with my niece when she was just a little over one. It started out red but did after time return to about 2 shades darker than her skin (we're Irish/Italian decent). It turned out that she has a pigmentation problem & now she is actually losing the pigment in the skin around the ankle & up the leg. It is strange as it happens often with African-Americans & will cause her skin to go completely white (really white). The derm watches her but as far as I know they've done nothing. Maybe get it looked at by a derm just to see. I can't remember the exact name of it (after all, she has 4 kids & they all have their medical problems). If this is the case it doesn't harm the child at all & now she doesn't even think about it (she's 8 & yes it bothered her a bit when she was younger but she's getting a rather thick skin so-to-speak about these things).

Good luck & I hope it does turn out to be something minor like this or even as a birth mark. :)

Could be a strawberry hemangioma - they can be external or internal. They tend to grow the first year - which could be why you didn't notice. Growth can be slow and then they will start to recede after that.

Hi.
I wonder if, since the doc thinks it's a bruise of some sort, maybe he got his foot caught in something and when trying to pull it out, bruised it in some way? That could explain why it is on both sides. I am just envisioning something like the space between the seat and the door/door handle (in the car), not necessarily there, but just as an idea of what I'm thinking.. something where he maybe stuck his foot and the space changed, then he pulled his foot back and it was too snug. Maybe even stuck it through the crib slats, then rolled so that it pinched the sides...
Just an idea.. (?)
My little boy was always getting into something.. it's a boy thing.. (shrug)...

Hi CT,

Has he just started wearing a new pair of shoes or new socks? My sister is violently allergic to synthetic latex and we discovered it because she had red marks, that looked similar to burns, around the area of her foot where the top of her new shoe was. It only happened on one foot(who knows why??)and every time she wore them, it got sightly larger in size. When we finally linked it to the shoes and spoke to a dermatologist, he said that it is happening more and more with the shoes that are being imported from China...

I know it sounds strange...hope you get your answer soon!

God bless,
M.

Hey C T,

I'm glad you posted this. My son developed a big red mark on his left ankle when he was 3 months. The doctor was perplexed and we thought he had an allergic reaction to some die in the socks or something. We waited to see if it was going to bother him, change colors, spread, or what. It did change to a light brown and when he takes a bath it gets bright red from the warm water. But he is now 20 months and the doctor just thinks that maybe it is a late birth mark. But I still wonder what caused this mark on him 3 months after he was born. It is just on one ankle and it covers the top of his ankle with two small spots above it. It is light brown now like a faded birth mark. If you find out any more info. please send me a personal message and let me know if your child keeps this mark or not.

Thanks,
T.

I was thinking that mabe it could be just a late birth mark because they come in all different shapes and size and in places that you wouldn't think of. Also mabe just a pigmitation of the skin.
