16 Month Old with Acid Reflux

Just wanted to know if there was anyone who has a young child with acid reflux. I talked to my daughters pediatrician, he told me to give her antacids. I am worried that this could be a serious problem. She will regurgitate at least once every other day. I don't want this to injure her esophagus. I have cut back on juices and other acidic foods, but this was the only thing helping her with her constipation. The doctor is treating her constipation with glycolax, a daily dose for the next six months. The doctor told me that her intestines absorb every bit of water out of her stool, and until I can get her to eat more fiber she needs this medicine. I'm not sure if it is the constipation that is making her regurgitate, or if she really has an acid reflux problem. Can anyone recommend an antacid to give to a 16 month old?

What can I do next?

does she drink cows milk or formula? both of my kids had reflux from birth and it was the same with breast milk or any kind of formula. As soon as they were old enough for cows milk and we started them on it, it stopped quickly.

I know its not the answer for everyone but thought it worth mentioning incase it works for you

goodluck!

Hello M.,

We fought with reflux the first 3 years of my sons life.

The reflux specialist we saw told us to use Gaviscon which is a liquid ant-acid you can buy pretty much any place. Just a 1/2 to 1 teaspoon should do the trick when your son is having problems. I used to give it to my son before bed and after meals.
We also put our son on Prilosec. You can have a prescription filled at a pharmacy, they will liquify it.
However, we found it much easier and less costly to buy the Prilosec OTC and crush 1/2 a pill and add it to applesauce, yogurt, ice cream etc. once a day. It takes about 7 days before it will take it's full effect. We used that dose since our son was 18 months and about 20 pounds.

Definatly stay away from orange/pineapple juice or fruit, tomatoe based foods (ketchup), peppers, chocolate, carbonated beverages.

Try these for the constipation: peas, pears, peaches, grapes and raisins all worked really really well for us.

If he is having chronic ear infections get him seen by an ENT specialist, the acid from the reflux can travel up into your son's ears and cause major damage

Good luck and keep me posted.

Our son had acid reflux. They tried him on antacids but was not strong enough and he continued to have an inflammed esophagus and threw up daily. I would talk to your doctor again and asked to be seen by a peds ear nose and throat doctor. At that young of an age, you really don't want to play around with their little developing bodies, especially with things like this that can lead to many other things.

M.,

I have 2 girls. My daughter who is now 2 1/2 got put on prevacid at 2 months because she would scream about 15 minutes after I was done feeding her. My other daughter turned just turned 11 weeks and she was put on prevacid last week. In both cases it made a huge difference. I would talk to your peditrician about it. If you do get a script for it make sure you get the dissolve tabs (I just mix it with teaspoon of water and give it with a syringe) Dont get the liquid form because it only is good for two weeks and then you have to refill the script. Lots of trips to the pharmacy. My older daughter got taken off of it at about a year and she was much better then. good luck!

My son had the same things. He was about 2 months old when they finally believed me and put him on baby Zantac. We also switched his formula to a lactose free soy formula and everything was fine. When he was born he would not latch on for breastfeeding, which is why I believe he had so much trouble with his tummy. Maybe you should see about the Zantac for your daughter. Hope all goes well.

I have two children both of which had acid reflux, one childs started right away soon after birth and the other ones started later. Both were put on liquid Zyntac, prescribed by there pediatrition. My daughter was on it for almost a year and then grew out of it and my son only needed it for a few months. After insurance I paid maybe $10 for a good size bottle considering they only took 1.5 ml of it so it lasted awhile. I gave it to them twice a day in the morning and at night. Both children are off and haven been for some time and we have had no problems with that affecting there esophagus. If you need any more help send a direct note to me. Thanks

Have you considered taking her to a specialist? They can always use a scope to see what's going on down there. I personally wouldn't think that constipation would be causing a child to regurgitate. That's something only your dr could tell you. However, the gycolax isn't too bad, my oldest son takes it daily for the next year. My youngest son was started on zantac when he was 6 months old then switched to prevacid when he could drink out of a cup. It worked wonders! We've finally been able to stop all his reflux medication and he's doing great at 4 years old. I might be leary of just giving him some OTC antacid
