I think my DD has a UTI. I will be taking her to the peds later today, but wanted to get the advice and suggestions of other moms. Any natural ways to help soothe her irritation? I gave her a warm sitz bath last night and that seemed to help for a short period. I don't like to give my kids antibiotics unless absolutely necessary and I know antibiotics are generally given for UTI's in infants. So are there any natural remedies I can try? I have used some for myself before, but I don't know of any specifically for infants.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I took my DD to the ped this morning. He said that for now is thinks it's just a really bad diaper rash since she has no other signs like vomiting and fever. He sent us home with Nystatin cream to be applied 4 times a day. So far it seems to be helping her, at least with keeping the itching to a minimum. He also said to stay away from a lot of sugary foods/drinks because the sugar aggravates yeast infections which I pretty much already figured from my own issues with yeast. So for now, we will just wait and see if the cream works. He said if after two days the diaper rash hasn't gotten better and if she continues to cry when she pees, then to bring her back in and they will do the UTI test by putting a catheter in her bladder to get a good urine test. And obviously if she develops any other symptoms, bring her in immediately.

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully it's just a bad diaper rash and will clear up with the Nystatin, along with some cranberry juice and the infants probiotics that I already give her on a regular basis.

If it is truly a UTI she will needs antibiotics. It is a bacteria infection and you can not get rid of bacteia with cranberry juice unfortunatlly. There are no outwards signs of a UTI besides the very high fever, so if you are suspecting it maybe its a yeast infection (common in babies with diapers especially girls.) My almost 1 year old daughter just spent a week in the hospital because of a UTI, so I am fairly sure they do not take them likely. I waited the fever out for a few days to see if it was viral (4 days) then ended up taking her into the er with a seizure so don't wait. At the time in the hospital we saw 6 other children come in and stay the week with a UTI, so I think it may be better treated with IV antibiotics. We just got out Saturday, so it must be going around!!!

Hi
Cranberry juice is supposed to help. Maybe water it down a little and put some in a sippy cup. I think less baths and bubblebath too, I heard they can cause UTIs
Good luck

Cranberry juise daily!! When my daughter was about 18 months old she got a horrid UTI for christmas 0 we spent it at the ER. Her fever was 102+ for days until the UTI finally started getting out of her. But the she got another and another and another and we had to do all these tests on her. Well she had some other issue, but we made drinking cranberry juice a daily thing, still do (she is now 9) and she seldom gets a UTI now, I think her last one was over a year ago. The white cranberry is good and does not stain everything =]
Good luck and God bless.

You need to consider giving her antibiotics... if untreated or it gets worse, it can cause kidney problems and other ripple effects.

A UTI is not just an irritation...it is an internal infection. My girl had one once, and by the time we realized, we had to take her to the ER and she had to get a catheter done and oral antibiotics.

Go according to your Ped's advice.
All the best,
Susan
