I agree w/Aloha, just skip the sippy. You can start w/the little dixie cups (they make for using in the bathroom)and put just an oz or mouthful in there - that way there will be less mess to clean while he's learning.
hi
I have a 16 month old who does not seem to get the concept of having to hold the cup horizontally to get the liquid to his mouth. He did it with bottles, so I don't understand what happened.
When we first introduced the sippee we used avent bottles so we just replaced the bottle nipple with the sippee insert thinking this would be easy for him to adjust to. He didn't get the liquid to his mouth, he usually gets mad and throws the cup. So we thought we would go the straw route. so now he thinks that he can hold the sippee in his mouth and that he can suck up the liquid (just sucking air becauset he cup isn't tipped)
I am not incredibly concerned at this moment because he uses the straw cups for milk and water etc.. but I want him to be able to use a drinking glass at some point.
Is it better just to go right to the regular glass and let him see the liquid coming toward him, to get the concept and skip the sippee all together?? (i only have adult glass glasses right now-but will get plastic if this is good idea) I don't care about it being messy.
Any thoughts?? Thank you!

Well from the sounds of things Logan is fine using a straw type cup- which he does well, and we'll probably just skip the sippee and go right to a glass. I love the dixie cup idea, I'll pick some up and we'll see if he's into it right now. Thanks for all the help ladies!

Hi! In my opinion the sippee cup is just something some people find to ease the transition from bottle to cup. This obviously isn't working for you so I would say just skip it - let your son watch you take a sip from a cup then immediately give him one. It will probably startle him at first but they usually catch on pretty quick.
Good luck!
Your baby not wanting a sippy cup may save you and him trouble later on. Sippy cups are bad for children's speech development. After 8 mos, a child should use a cup with a straw. There are several kinds where the straw does not leak when tipped, so they are just as neat as sippy cups.
We used the same bottles and my son also threw them. Then we tried other sippy cups, and he hated them all. So I stopped wasting money on cups that only became objects to throw accross the room. We then stopped stying a sippy and went straight to a reg. cup. We filled it only an inch because of the spill factor. It took him a couple times to realize that it will spill all over your face, but after that it was regular cups all the way...sippys were a failure. He turned 2 in January and we will only fill the regular cups only a couple inches at a time since they are not spill proof. Good luck.
Well if you dont care about it being messy (and it will be) then yes let him go to the big cup. The sippy cup is just one more habit to break them of later. You can also try some of the sippy cups with straws because they require that the cup stay in the downward position.

If it helps, my daughter never got it either...we just use straw cups. BUT...if we give her a water bottle, like a Zephyrhills bottle, or our cups, she knows just how to do it. Still doesn't get the sippy concept though...ANyhow, I'm not concerned, cause she understands the actual cup thing, I just don't give those to her too often at this point (19 mos.) because she isn't coordinated enough to manage it. So, try a regular cup and see if he gets it, and go from there. Good luck!

There has been research done on the negative effects on the mussels of the month caused by sippy cups. I would suggest continuing to use the straw cup or graduate to the big cup. My children use both; the straw while out and the cup at home. My 17 month old can switch fine. He makes a big mess though.
We didn't have any problems with the transition from bottle to sippy cup or a straw with the twins. They have used the Gerber bottle/cups from the beginning. I think they were probably 1.5 before we really started using the sippy cup. I've been using Playtex forever and just stayed with them. WalMart has sippy cups for less than a dollar and they are wonderful for mealtime. They also have disposable cups with straws (can be washed out by hand or put in the top of the dishwasher as well) and I think they are probably a few bucks but are nice to use as well, since most restuarants only give you cups with straws. They also know how to use a straw, so when I open those bottles of yogurt, I insert the straw just enough and they do great with it. They will drink from a big cup, but since they make such a mess, the sippy cup is the best alternative at this point. They love to take the straw out and lick it.
If you want to try using the sippy cup again, try it gradually at another time. All children are diferent, so we just have to try different things. Sort of like trying new foods...if they don't like it the first time, try it another time.
Just my $0.02! Hope it helps! Good luck with your little one in whatever you do! It will work out the way it is supposed to, and don't get discouraged, wait until he throws his food on the floor!! LOL
Take care,
God Bless,
