Hi My 15week old baby sleeps about 11 hours straight through the night but eats constantly all day.. the first meal he eats a ton (7am) then his next meal is at 10am but after that it's like every 1-2hrs (almost like he is snacking). I dont know if this is because he's catching up from sleeping through the night or if it's totally irrelevant from that. I want to try to get him to eat every 3hrs and be on a schedule? Is he possibly too young for that type of schedule?

any advice is greatly appreciated... thanks!!!

What can I do next?

honestly i don't know how to put breastfed baby on a 3 hr schedule. i believe in nursing on demand. breast milk dissolves much faster than formula, maybe your baby is going through a growth spurt? or maybe he didn't eat sufficient amount of time at the previous feeding. i noticed when my babies were sleeping through the night, the ate more during the day. i say you're lucky to have all night sleeper, so why bother trying to change that. besides when the baby is crying because he's hungry, what are you going to do, make him wait another hour???
also nursing is very soothing for a baby, so maybe he is going through a tough time during the day or wants to fall asleep and all that requires nursing. sorry i don't have any suggestion, both of my girls nurse every 1,5-2 hrs at this age, in few more weeks the time will stretch to 3-4 hrs.

I know it's so frustrating to not be able to plan longer times between feedings, but hold off on the schedule if possible! While schedules work wonders for some people, it just seems like your son is doing so well on his own! He's sleeping great, eating well, and thriving.

I wouldn't mess with a good thing. He'll even it out as he gets older, and for now- enjoy the fact that he's so good at getting his needs met!

I agree with the previous posters. At this age they need to nurse every 2 hours. You are lucky that he doesn't do it around the clock. My 6 months old son still nurses about every 2 -3 hours.
Nurse on demand, once he starts solids, maybe you can put him on a schedule

My 6 month old still nurses every 2 hours (or more).

And he doesn't sleep through the night.

My guess is that if you did try to space out his feedings to every 3 hours you'd cause him to wake up and nurse at night. If I were you, I'd think about which was more important before trying to change things (and trust me, when you're not getting any, it's sleep that's more important, lol).

And not to worry, babies don't keep any kind of schedule for very long!

Good luck!

Dear R.,

I think that is wonderful that your baby is sleeping through the night at such a young age. I didn't breastfeed so I am not to sure about the frequency. I would think that if he is sleeping through the night at such a young age he is probably making up for not eating. If you think he is just nursing so frequent to just soothe, maybe try a pacifier to stretch out his feedings. If that doesn't work then I am sure he is hungry. I say better to feed him all day then be up at night. I am sure as he grows his feeding schedule will change again. Good luck on you baby boy!!
