15 Month Old Not Walking/talking/texture Aversion - No More Dairy?

My 15 month old boy just went in for his check up at our pediatrician. He is cruising but not walking on his own, he is not trying to talk and he has texture aversion and is a picky eater. My doctor recommended that we pull him off of all dairy for a month to see if that works. I have my doubts that this is it (mom's instinct I guess) but I wanted to see if any other mom's out there have tried this and had any success?
My now 3 year old had the same problem when he was that age. He has grown out of it for the most part but still has some texture issues and his speech is delayed...

What can I do next?

It sounds to me like he should be evaluated for autism. Has your pedi considered this at all? I would call ECI and set up an evaluation through them to start. Does he cruise on his tippy toes? He may also have SID - sensory integration disorder. It could be nothing, but the earlier you can intervene and start therapy the better. I will put your family in our prayers.

If you contact ECI, words of advice:
1. Do not let them freak you out. They are great, but they sometimes seem to overdiagnose in my experience, so take to heart what they say but also know that your child is on his OWN timetable.
2. Be strong if you feel something and demand they get your child what you think he needs.
3. If you feel that your case worker isn't meeting your needs then you can always call to request someone else or to have a specialist come.

ECI is a great resource, but their goal is to teach parents so you have to stay really involved. We've been using them for a year for speech delay and have had great results (but I've also been very vocal about what I think is best for my child!). It would be worth your time to have them do an evaluation.

Best of luck!

I think that I would get a second opinion. I don't know that I would worry about not walking on his own yet. Some kids are just late walkers. But what concerns me is the not talking and oral aversion. Has he had his hearing checked? Both of my kids had residual fluid in their ears and needed ear tubes. The only reason why it was caught is that I noticed that they weren't talking very much. I'm not really sure what diary has to do with a texture aversion. Sounds like your pedi is just shooting from the hip on this one.

I would call ECI but also chack out Dr. Laura at Body and Soul Chiropractic in Plano. I took my son to one of her associates that is on maternity and she worked wonders. mY some had mild sensory integration, didn't sleep throught he night until 10 months, crawled around 10-11 months and walked at about 15-16 month. His verbal skills were on target but gross and fine motor were all a little delayed. He is a twin and preemie so the dr. wasn't overly concerned. I found out my son had toxins in his body from a vaccine he had had a bad reaction to and it was making his nervous system fire, thus he couldn't settle down for sleep. At a very young age babies get startled. The neurons eventually connect and they grow out of this(don't know the whole technical explanation). His didn't mature and he was still started by things....My son would literally scream if someone coughed, sneezed or laughed loud around him. He would scream "too loud" in the car if a car honked their horn NEAR us.. It was so sad to me. We went to PT at Playworks in Dallas with Sandy butine and then later saw Dr. Sue and he is a different child. Sandy taught him transitions to get into the crawling, walking position and worked with confindence, strength and motor skills. Dr. sue reset his little body to relax and did cranial sacral treatments to "turn on his brain" and purge the toxins. I would highly recommend checking out every avenue. If your child has SID or something else, a pedi that is highly recommended for alternative meds in Frisco is Dr. Rao. I'd check into him. I have a degree in elementry ed and Special ed and I can't say I have full faith in "modern medicine" when it comes to children and special needs. There is more to our bodies than conventional medicine takes in account. Oh, we also cut out most dairy, wheat and corn b/c those were all things his body is sensitive to.. I can tell when he has had too much of that stuff b/c he gets really grumpy! Good luck! get out there and find what works for you!
