15 Month Old & a Urologist

My daughter had a urinary tract infection last week. After 10 days of antibiotics, we took her for tests of her kidneys. Her doctor just called with the results today and said she has a little reflux on her right side. It's not bad, but the doctor is supposed to make us an appointment to see a urologist, I think just to keep watch on her condition.

Has anyone else had to take their daughter to a urologist at this age before? What do they do??? My sister had really bad kidney infections when she was little (they caught it late) and had to take medicine every day for a few years. Is that necessary if they catch it early??

Edit -- The tests they did last Friday were the renal ultrasound and the VCGU, so those have already been done.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who replied. We saw the urologist this morning. He told us that most kids will outgrow the reflux, and the best thing to do is to see if she will too. While we wait, we have to make sure she doesn't get another UTI. She will be taking antibiotics daily for a year, a urine culture will be done every 3 months or if she has a temp of 101.5+, lab test to check for antibiotic reaction will be done every 6 months, a VCUG and renal ultrasound will be done every year until the reflux is gone.

So, hopefully she will outgrow this soon and everything will be fine!

my daughter had a uti when she was 4 months old found out both my girls have kidney refluxes. I did to when i was little- it runs in family's so watch out when she has children. we have been on antibotics for years now-waiting for them to either outgrow it or have surgery to fix it. it wasn't such a simple surgery when i was little but it is now.

My daughter had a really bad kidney infection when she was about 4. We had to go to a urologist and they did an ultrasound to get some pictures and did a few other test, we had to go a few times so they could test her urine and make sure the bacteria was gone. We also had to go to Baptist to have a test run where they cathederize her and run some dye into her kidneys and then have her pee and watch what happens. She ended up being completely fine, the catheder was the worst part of it all :-) Good luck, I hope your daughter gets a clean bill of health.

does anyone in your family have IC?
I have IC and was dx. @ 23 but they have no clue how long i had it before it gave me problems. I would ask if there was a test for IC in some one this young.

Wow - I didn't know this was so common! Our daughter was diagnosed w/ pyelonephritis and reflux on the left when she was 10 months old. She spent 4 days in the hospital to clear up the infection and was on antibiotics for another 9 months. They did a VCG and renal ultrasound on her at the hospital, and they did another ultrasound at her 3-month checkup (after the infection), then another three months after that. She'll have another VCG at Children's in B'ham in September to make sure the reflux is all cleared up. She saw Dr. Joseph, who was great.

Hello! My daughter, who is 3 now, had lots of UTIs and kidney infections when she was 1-2 years old. One kidney infection was so bad it landed her in the hospital right around her 1 yr old birthday. After that we were sent to a pediatric urologist in Birmingham, (we are in Montgomery), who did a Xray type test and determined she had a little bit of kidney reflux. She was put on antibiotic once a day for a year, and we saw the urologist for all UTIs and Kidney infections after that. After about a year and a half we were able to wean her off the meds, and she is med free, and mostly infection free today! The urologist, as well as our pediatrician told us, as the child grows taller, the tubes that cause the reflux stretch and the child usually grows out of the problem his/herself. I think that is what happened to her. I am glad. Although the medicine had no taste and we mixed it with yogurt and milk, etc, she never knew! Hope this helps and perhaps puts your mind at ease.

Not for the same reason but we had to take Julian to a urologist when he was 6 months old for his circumcision. It was hard to do really but we made it through. I had a friend with me since I wasn't with Burt yet at the time so I had a support system with me to help through it. It really scared him as he was already seeing multiple doctors to watch his progress from having been 8 weeks premature. Call me if you'd like.

My daughter had the same test done when she was 13 months old. She had the reflux on her left side. She had to take an antibotic everyday until she turned 31 months old and they retested her. She has out grown it, which is what normally happens. You did a good thing by letting her tested so you can take care of her.

I am not sure I hope everything goes well. I have to take my son to a urologist at the end of this month and he will be a week shy of his three month birthday. He has a condition known as hypospadius. I hope everything goes well for your daughter! My thoughts are with you.

Hi S.!!
My daughter was diagnosed with bilateral kidney reflux when she was a month old. She has been on antibiotics to prevent urinary tract infections. She sees Dr. Herndon at Children's Hospital in Birmingham. Every 6 months she has ultrasounds of her kidneys and once a year at children's she has a test called vcg. It's a cat scan. They put a catheter in her bladder, fill it up with dye, take out the catheter, and take pictures with the cat scan as she pees out the dye. It lets them know if her reflux has gotten better, and how her kidneys are working. I was told that she could grow out of it. If you have any questions or want to email me, my address is ____@____.com this helps some!!!
