My son is turning 14. Any ideas on what to do for fun. He says he's too old for a "party". I asked him if he wanted a boy/girl party. Bonfire in the back yard. That sort of thing and he said no. Can't say I'm unhappy about that! LOL Any other ideas would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

Maybe he would rather invite a friend or two and go out to dinner and go to a movie, bowling or an activity he is in to? Since he doesn't want a party, have you asked him what else he would like to do?

I think that 14 is a tricky age for most boys. They're right on the cusp of boyhood to manhood and I think that 14 is actually an important birthday to commemorate, and for his family to acknowledge to him that he is growing up. It is a tradition in my family for any boy turning fourteen to have a "man day" to celebrate his coming closer to adulthood. This usually involved close male friends and any fathers, uncles, grandfather etc and they spent a day doing some fun outdoor activity (fishing, hiking, rock climbing etc) without the rest of the family (this is only for this special birthday). Before they came home, but at the end of the day, each older male family member would take the time to tell the the birthday boy something they were proud of him about, or liked about him, or just a funny story about them. Then when they come home we would all have a family dessert together and my parents would basically acknowledge to him that he's closer to becoming an adult and that he will have more freedoms but also more responsibilities. Okay, sorry to go on and on, but I had to say something because my family makes such a big deal about a boy's 14th b-day. Hope any of this helps!

There were some birthdays that our daughter just wanted her favorite meal and video with a friend and us at home. We felt bad that it was not more exciting, but that is what she wanted.. We would let her pick the restaurant and go to the video store and pick out a few videos. She was happy as a clam.

One year it was a restaurant and a trip to her favorite book store to pick out books she really wanted.. (we call her grandma)

Hi There! I thought your son might like this event. I saw this post and thought I would respond...There is also a coupon code attached...I think I saw it on upcoming.yahoo.events- Detroit. Here's the post I saw!

If you haven’t had a chance to see the guys in action, now is the perfect chance! The Harlem Globetrotters are touring again and will be coming to Auburn Hills, MI on April 11th at 4PM. Even if you have seen the show, take your family and friends to share in the fun! I can assure you first hand…it’s safe to guarantee a good time!

Tickets have already gone on sale. I work for Miles of Marketing (www.milesofmarketing.com) and was given a promotional code to save $7.00 on your tickets. I thought it would be nice to share that savings with other mothers out there. All you need to do is use the promotional code MOM during checkout (some restrictions apply). Here is the link to purchase tickets! It’s nice that someone out there rewards us parents for doing what we do everyday! Enjoy the show!

What about a laser tag outing for a few of his friends or something like that? Depending on what's around you can do that or paintball, etc.

My son is 18 now. Lots of times he had a sleepover with the guys ( a few 2-3) and they went bowling, chuck e cheese, joe dumars, etc. Don't dismiss chuck e cheese; many bigger kids have such fond memories of the place they continue to love it. His favorite birthday party (13th) was planned quickly, a couple of days before the party---I called several of his friends (well actually their moms) and mentioned it was my son's birthday and they dropped their son's off at chuck e cheese; meanwhile I had arranged to go to chuck e cheese with my son and he was so surprised when he got there and saw all his friends. He just mentioned the other day that this was his favorite birthday! I was impressed that his friends managed to keep it a secret.

The easiest way to find out what he'd like to do on his birthday is to ask him.
