14 Month Old Suddenly Not Sleeping Thru Nite

My wonderful 14 month old who has been an angel sleeping thru the night (or on occasion waking once for 1-2 minutes) has suddenly started to cry multiple times during the night. Last night, he woke up four times (11:30PM, 12:30AM, 2:30AM, and 4:30AM). I finally threw in the towel after 4:30AM and brought him to bed with me. When I go in to check on him to see why he's crying, as soon as I pick him up he settles right down and dozes off in my arms, so I don't think he's sick or teething or in any discomfort, right??? Is this that separation anxiety you hear about? How should I handle? Let him cry for a few minutes? Will this pass!? I would have tried letting him cry but my husband starts complaining that he can't sleep & baby is waking him up, blah blah blah...he is under the false impression that I get to nap all day while he is at work (uh-huh, yeah right...that's what I do all day). Sorry for sarcasm, remember I am very tired this morning.

What can I do next?

I don't have any suggestions/advice to offer because I am currently going through the same thing with my just now 15 month old. (it's been going on off and on for the past month or so)...I don't understand it or know why, but it just happens. I think whatever you can do to get your little guy to sleep is great. Whatever works best for you. Don't get me started on hubbies and how little they understand...

I would suggest buy your husband some ear plugs and let him cry it out just go in and check on him every once in a while to make sure he's ok. Good luck hope you get some sleep soon.

Rule out teething or an ear infection, the latter can exist without any symptoms of illness, and do not ever bring the baby to bed with you again. You will establish a horrible pattern that you then have to break.

At that age, he may not need his nap or one of them so I would try cutting out naps if the child is not sleeping throug the night.

You might want to mention to your husband that he was very lucky to have a child that is just now experiencing sleeping problems and as you did not have him by yourself, it is not your problem to deal with alone. If he thinks staying at home with a kid is a vacation offer to allow him an entire day or two dealing with everything you do. My X was home alone with my two older kids for two days when I had the third and he was whining about how much work it was and wanting to go back to work and he was only taking the kids to school and activities, wasn't dealing with errands, house cleaning, etc.

I agree with the ear plug comment, if he doesn't want to deal leave them by the side of the bed.

It could be teething or some kind of discomfort. My son usually only wakes if he has an ear infection, or his teeth are really bad. He also does this when he's had a very busy day is overly tired. I try my best not to go in his room, because I've noticed that it only makes it worse, and then it also becomes habit for him to wake in the middle of the night. I have to let him cry it out. If I know he's teething, then I sometimes give him tylenol before bed, and this helps. It's hard, but it really is the best thing. If he's screaming for more than 15 minutes, and it's his pain cry, I'll put orajel on his gums, but I (usually) don't pick him up. I'll pat his back for about 5 minutes, then leave the room.

And my husband also thinks I get naps and don't do anything that takes any sort of energy all day. You're not alone on that one!
