Help....I am having a heck of a time with my 14 month old fighting diaper and clothing changes. I try giving him a toy to help distract him and he just throws it, I've tried singing and making a game of it and nothing seems to be working. Diaper changes should not be so difficult for either myself or my little guy. I think it took us a good 20 minutes to do the diaper and clothing change this am....lots of tears and frustration from both me and my boy. Any suggestions that may help??

What can I do next?

1. Ignore his tantrums (seriously - just pretend like he's not struggling), 2. Sing a song yourself and tell yourself that you're having fun, 3. Hold him down if necessary, 4. It will get better... it's a phase that doesn't last that long.

5. Try not to think about the phase around 3 years old when he can take his own clothes off and run naked and giggling around the house while you try to catch him before company comes over.

This is very typical. The only advice I have is that it will pass. Hold your group and as much as possible keep calm. My husband was always best at this - he would play a game... "is this my belly - and tickle it" etc... seemed to distract my son. Good luck : )

My son, 18 months, does the same and has been doing it for sometime. EVERYTHING is a fight... changing diapers and clothes, wiping his face and hands after a meal, giving him a bath, etc. He loves to get into the bath to play with the water, but hates when I try to wash his body and hair. It is extremely frustrating but I just try to ignore it and hope that it will pass soon.

I'll echo your other responses and say I had the same issue with my little one at that age so it's perfectly normal. We basically resorted to changing "on the fly" as in while she was running around unless it was a messy poopy dipe. It was always a struggle.

Good luck!

With my very active daughter, diaper changing and clothes changing got moved to the floor pretty early as keeping her on a changing table was so impossible it was dangerous. I got good at changing her while she was standing or on the move. I also didn't try to do it all at once - diaper - break change the shirt - break - then the pants. Shoes and socks were pointless unless we were headed out the door and it was really cold! LOL!

For dirty diapers I had to occasionally throw my leg over her upper body while she lay (wiggled like crazy) on the floor. Like others I sang or kept up a commentary and tried not to take it personally. It was her job to explore the world and she took that job very seriously and changing got in the way of her job! :-)
