14 Month Old Feeding

My 14 month old still won't eat table foods. His diet consists of breastmilk (trying to wean), Gerber 2nd Stages fruits, veggies and meats, cereal and yogurt. I have had a difficult time finding information about how much food I should be feeding him every day. He is a picky eater and doesn't seem to enjoy eating, so meal times are a struggle. If anyone has suggestions as to how much food per meal I should be giving him, please let me know...Also, any suggestions on how to get him to enjoy food and want to feed himself more than just 2-3 cheerios at a time. Thanks!

What can I do next?

has your son refused the stage 3 foods??there isnot much difference in the 2 and 3 food in the fruits or veggies.. the dinners are chunky in the 3s.

My daughter ws a terrible eater as a baby..but she did much better later she was still on babyfood at 14 months.

she liked canned fruit cut up small. sheliked peas and green beans.

just keep trying foods - put them on the high chair tray eventually they will eat them.

You said he is still on breast milk?? Are you using sippy cups?? I would guess that if your still breast feeding, or giving a bottle than he is full from drinking too much. I would give less liqiuds and push more on the solid foods. Gerber makes tons of foods for that age group. At that age he is ready for more foods and less breast milk.

My daughter loved eating spaghetti at that stage...actually anything that would make a big mess! I coordinated eating with bath times :)

It sounds like you are feeding him a lot of foods... what is it he is picky about? Have you thought of mashing your foods or putting them in the blender so that they are smooth?

Is there a reason you are trying to wean? And has the not eating and trying to wean coincided?

I agree - the Super Baby Food book is really good and I think there is a toddler version. I know the daily amounts for a 12 month old are as follows: 24 ounces of milk (cow's milk/breastmilk/formula), 4-6 Tbsp. cereal, 4 oz. juice, 1-2 small servings of carbs, 1/2 cup fruit, 1/2 cup veggies, 2 oz. meat or cheese. I can't imagine 14 months being much more than that. This would be spread over 3 meals and 2 snacks per day. Hope that helps! Is your son coordinated enough to get table foods into his mouth? If not maybe it is a frustration thing-? If that might be the problem I would talk to your pediatrician - maybe he is having trouble coordinating eyes/hands? Otherwise I would just keep trying, the more you expose him to, the more likely the struggles will stop. Let him see you eat, too. Toddlers love to imitate!

Super Baby Foods is a great book with healthy foods that you make yourself. I highly recommend it, as it was highly recommended to me. It will give you great ideas for meals and snacks.

As far as how much they should eat...my son never ate as much as the charts/docots/books said he should. I just made sure at every meal he had a veggie, fruit, and protein. They will let you know if they are hungry or not.
I wish you the best of luck. Did you discuss with your ped? The answer I got was as long as he is gaining weight your okay.

Good Luck
