My son will be turning 13 in a week and a half. It seems like a milestone which should really be celebrated. Each birthday, my kids have 2 parties...one with their friends and one with their family...but I'm looking for something special this year to mark the big event. The hitch is that my husband has been out of work for over 4 months, so finances are a bit tight. He's a really good kid and I'm looking for ideas to make his day memorable without costing a fortune.

What can I do next?

Hello P.- Maybe you could see about reserving a little league field or some ball field and have a wiffle ball torn. with both family and friends. You could do cake and ice cream (EVEN PIZZA) right at the feild. Hang some birthday decorations up in the dugouts (which will not cost that much- make them yourself to look like signs to take to a ball game.) Have everyone make or bring a sign/ noisemaker so when your son gets up to bat it will be like he is a pro player!! Just an idea. Also if you need some extra income contact me. I am looking to add advisors to my Become team, total ground floor opportunity! Become is anti-aging skincare and now you can sign up with no money down! Sign up now and you can earn money by the end of the month! ____@____.com

Since I'm not sure how big your family is, this idea may or may not work . . . Try asking everyone to contribute to one big "coming of age" gift/event instead of individual gifts this year (the same amount of $$ that they would have spent on him otherwise). It will help you to afford something that he would really like without putting too much burden on anyone. You could either ask for cash and buy the gift yourself or ask for giftcards to a specific location. Take some photos of him enjoying the gift/event and pass along to everyone who contributed. Play up that it's his 13th and not that you are pinching pennies and then make sure that everyone has fun~

When my daughter turned 13 we rented a blow-up velcro wall and the kids had a blast...maybe around $150? We served $5 hot and readys from Little Caesars and the kids couldn't have had a better time!

take one friend to an amusement park
take one friend to chucky cheese
take two or three friends bowling
take two or three friends to a movie

Which ever you choose, let the friends stay the night and go nuts, stay up late, eat snacks and all that. Or let them sleep in a tent in the backyard overnight. 13 is a big age and being alone to do their goofy teen stuff is a blast for them. You can make up for less money by making a huge cake and tons of streamers and balloons to kick around too.
