I need some advice, my 13 month old boy has been sick for about 3 weeks now. It started with heavy diarrhea and vomiting, we saw the doctor and he said it was the stomach flu, and sent us home with pedialyte. Vomiting stopped by the third day, but the diarrhea is stil there. He hasnt been on any diary products for 3 weeks now. I just dont know what it can be, we saw the doctor again, and he gives no meds and suggests simply pedialyte and a low diet. Could teething cause diarrhea for so long. What can we do to stop this diarrhea any advice?

What can I do next?

Our doctor suggested something called the BRAT diet.

Bananas
Rice
Apple
Toast

It seems to help.
Good luck.

We use Florastor as well, it does work wonders and it doesn't hurt them. Good Luck.

My son had the same problem a couple of years ago. He sick with a stomach flu and his system took forever to recover. Finally, someone suggested Florastor. It's powered "good germs" that help recolonize the colon after an illness. I know it sounds gross, but it worked for us. My son's problem was his body was not getting back the good bacteria that's normally in our system to help digestion. Florastor for Kids is a fruity flavored powered that you can get at the pharmacy for about $12. Call around before shopping, though. So pharmacies will have to order it, but some keep it in stock. I just sprinkled onto my son's applesauce or even poured it into his milk.
Good luck!

Hi C.,

My son had Rotavirus last year about this time and it seemed to last forever, but I think it was about 2 weeks altogether. 3 weeks seems like a really long time to have diarrhea.

Is it pretty much liquid or just really mushy? Teething can cause it to be pretty mushy (and often yellowish and smells like vomit). With stomach viruses it is often liquid with just a bit of color.

Maybe try some yogurt if your son will eat it. Sometimes the active cultures help regulate the stomach a little. Just a few spoonfuls at each meal may help.

Good luck!
L.
