My son is 13 months old tomorrow and we have had a lot of issues with him being sick, alot. I think he has been sick more than not since he was born, probably pretty close to 1/2 the time. Is this a sign of something else. Our pediatrician doesn't seem to worry but we do. Not in daycare at this time, we have to get referrals to go see anyone else. He is cutting a tooth. He is on milk been off formula for a while now.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

OK SO WE WENT TO THE DOCTOR YESTERDAY AND SHE SAID IT IS OK, SHE SAID THAT IT MIGHT BE THE SIGNS OF ASTHMA BUT THEY USUALLY OUTGROW IT BY THE TIME THEY ARE 5. SHE GAVE US A PRESCRIPTION FOR ABUDERAL AND I THINK ZCAR (NOT SURE) ITS A STERIOD, INHALED. gAVE US INHALERS TO GIVE IT TO HIM. HE WAS WEEZING, 2ND BOUT NOW SO THAT IS WHY SHE SAID POSSIBLY ASTHMA. WILL LET YOU KNOW MORE AS THINGS ARISE.

Frequent symptoms that seem like a cold most likely are an allergy. There could be a reaction to pets, pests, mold, seasonal allergies, cleaning products, foods, etc.... My 2 year old has a problem with dust mites. We have gotten humidifiers and an air filtration system. I use those swiffer dusters to dust instead of dry rags and I got a vaccum with a good hepa filter system. This has really cut down on his cold like symptoms. I also switched all of our household cleaning products over to non toxic. You could also try giving him benedryl and seeing if that helps. That is a fairly esy way to tell if you have an allergy problem. God luck.

I know a lot of kids young and older who have chronic mucous. I am going to assume your child has a "cold" when you say sick.
There are times, many times, when doctors say things are normal. Drinking cow milk is normal, so the symptoms caused by it are normal. They just don't say what the USDA and the FDA don't want them to say.
Cow milk is big business, but it does not do a body good. It is highly allergenic, as well as soy. If milk is the problem, I would suggest trying goat milk. WIC offers it if you are on WIC. I don't know at what age they give children whole milk.
My daughter was on regular infant formula until I realised she was not able to sleep at night due to choking on her mucous. Since I stopped giving her cow milk, she has been doing wonderfully

sounds to me like a possible allergy. I don't necessarily subscribe to the theory that, if a child is in daycare, they get sick more often. All three of mine went through extended times at daycare at various ages and I actually found them to be healthier then. My theory is that they build up more immunities that way.

Anyway, when my oldest was a baby, and actually up until he was about 12-13 months old, he was on soy formula. He had been chronically congested, slept in his swing for months because he couldn't breathe when he laid down and NOTHING I did would make it better. After MANY trips to the doctor, we were there once and were being seen by a physician's asst. He gave me samples of soy formula just on a hunch (both of his children had had milk allergies). I dropped my son at daycare at 10am with the formula samples and, when I picked him up at 5:30 he was better! It was amazing. He stayed on soy formula until I weaned him to milk and he was able to go to regular milk without any problems. He's 14 now and has never had further problems with cow's milk.

If your son is still on formula, try some soy based formula and see how it goes. It can't hurt him and, if it doesn't do the trick, at least you know you can eliminate that. If he's already on regular milk, you can pick up soy or rice milk in the aisle where all the coffees and teas usually are. Worth a try as milk allergies, even slight ones, will show themselves with symptoms of congestion and cough. Good luck!!

1. What does your pediatrician say?
2. His immune system may be building and he may become one of the healthier children in preschool!

I am new here, just signed up this minute, so i dont know if I am doing this right. I say no it probably isnt something to worry about. What kind of sick do you mean though. My oldest pretty much lived with an ear infection and other things like that to go with it the first 3 years of his life. He is perfectly fine now.

My middle child was good as a baby, and ended up with ear and tonsilitis problems for abotu 18 months strait, had his tonsils out right before his 4th b-day and is fine.

They often outgrow these types of things as there bodies continue to build there immune systems and such.

some things can be contributed to allergies. Many stomach problems are allergies or intolerances that are overlooked. I may come back as I find more to add.

hugs to you too mama, it is hard to care for the little ones when they dont feel well so much.

You might try giving him a daily vitamin to build his immune system. My daughter was getting sick every 2 weeks, and each cold lasted about a week. I started giving her a daily gummy viatmin, and she has been doing a lot better.

It's hard when you have a sick baby. I agree with Jaci D. If you have insurance that does not require a referral, you can go see a specialist. It might make you put your mind at ease. What kind of "sick" is he when is is sick? It might just be the environment as well. It seems like he is developing normally otherwise, right? It could also be allergies (to milk maybe). Many of my kiddies were put on Soy milk and did just fine.

Also, there are teething issues that could be misconstrued as sick, but that is normal as well.

I wouldn't worry too much. If he is constantly having a temperature that is too high or if he is having diarrhea and such, then take him in. :) I hope this helps.

If your pediatricain is not too worried about it I would do one of two things, chalk it up to just being a child...this is a good way to develpoe immunity later on in life. OR, find another ped. Sometimes these illnesses adapt into RAD or asthsma and can be a sign of something more extensive. You can always change doctors or ask for a second opinion. He is your child, it is your choice, mommy knows best...trust me. I work in a doctors office/ER and I have seen that most of the time, the parents intuition is right more times then wrong....

If you are worried aout something never let a doctor tell you to wait and see. Get it checked by a specialist always! If I had listened to my own intuition my daughter would have been diagnosed with High Functioning Autism a lot sooner! My daughter just had an immune panel done as she stays sick continuously throughout the winter. She has an immune deficiency and will require intravenous medication to correct it. Many autistic kids have the same issue. She also had chronic ear infections until she got tubes. Make an appt with an Allergy/Immunologist as soon as you can as they often can take weeks to get into. In the meantime, insist your pediatrician order a complete immune panel on your son. It's a blood test. If he won't order it, find a new doctor who will listen to your concerns. I can't stress enough to listen to your Mommy intuition always, it won't steer you wrong! Best of luck,

S. it could be the things in your home that are causing him to be sick... perhaps he is even allergic to something, we had some similar issues with our first child, and it turned out to be allergies.
