13-Month Old with Allergies????

We live in a rural area and the pollen is AWFUL!!! Yesterday our AC konked out on us and we had all the windows open. My 13-month old spent all day sneezing, coughing, runny eyes, the whole nine. This morning he woke up and sounds like the congestion has moved to his chest some. He's crackling and popping and coughing. He's not running a fever, and the head congestion is gone. My older son had asthma and was diagnosed around age 2. Is my little one too young for allergies or asthma?

What can I do next?

I agree, call the pediatrician. Ours had my son on Children's Claritin for seasonal allergies, but he was older than 13 mos. In my opinion, sometimes they have to just to just get acclamated to their surroundings and they grow and build up tolerances. However, even tho your family has a history of allergies, there are just far too many scary flu stories on the news these days to not make a trip to the Doc to be sure.

I don't think he is to young for either. It wouldn't hurt to take him to the DR and have him checked. I bet he is a miserable little guy. I do hope he gets to feeling better.
Good Luck.

he's not too young to have allergies, but he's too young to take the meds for it. they are heavy-duty and have serious consequences. try physical barriers (tack light cloth or sheer netting over the windows), lots of cool baths and washcloths, homeopathic remedies. are you eating local honey and as much local produce as possible? that's probably the single best thing you can do, introduce natural antigens to all of your systems.

This one is a hrad one - depends on the doctor you talk to. Most doctors say yes - too young to diagnose. Personally I don't think that is too young. My old allergist would also say that is not too young. I have allergies and so do both of my girls. My mom and dad, brother also have allergies to many things. My old allergist looked at the family history and started treatment as soon as the signs presented in my girls. BUT most doctors will make you wait until they are 2 - some now with this new goofy thing they are doing won't give meds to children under 6. So the children get to suffer with symptoms until then.

NOT AT ALL, she is old enough. My little girl had a huge issue with the cherry blossoms, she is barely 2 yrs. We used benadryl until an appointment.

my son had allergies from 6 months up. He and my husband share the same allergies so we could easily see the trend when his allegies would act up. Even his dr said it was allergies once he talked to us. We just had to keep his nose clear and run the air conditioning all the time. He didn't start Clartin til he was about 2 though but that didn't work so well for him so he switched to Zyrtec which seems to work. He doesn't have asthma though so I don't know about that but it definitely wouldn't hurt to call his pediatrician. Shaun used to also like to play in the bathtub with his head underwater and that would clear up his nose too, really gross to clean up but he was clear for a bit. GOod luck.

i cannot remember when my son (6 months or so) started with all the same stuff you are talking about. i would give your doctor a call and see what they think. if it doesn't go away in a couple days like a cold would, then i would think its allergies. good luck.

He is not to young for allergies and/or asthma and since his sibling has them it is even more likely. Take him to the doctor. Good luck.

Your little one is not too young to have allergies and or asthma especially since it seems to run in your family. My son was diagnosed with allergy induced asthma when he was 11 months old. And we have to keep the windows and doors closed with the AC running when it gets too warm. I could call the doctor because it seems like he is having an asthma attack.
