12Mo Won't Take Milk or Formula from a Sippy

We took away the morning and afternoon bottles this past Saturday. DD will not drink more than a few sips from the sippy or her straw cup. We still do the bottle right before bed. She's eating ok and drinks water troughout the day. How long do I let her go not drinking milk/formula during the day before it's a problem? Her twin brother is doing ok with the cups - drinks most of both.

What can I do next?

How is she drinking the water? I would stop giving her a bottle at all except for the night time if you want to continue that.. but I ran into the same thing with my daughter, and her doctor said to only give her milk in a sippy cup at her mealtimes and water the rest of the day. (she would drink water from her cup, but not milk). I thought there was no way that would work, but it did. By day #2, she would drink it at meal time :) Hope that helps! Good luck. Congrats on the twins, that's awesome.

The is what worked for our DD because she wouldn't take milk from a sippy. I wanted to make sure she was still getting her dairy so I stuck with the bottle until she got used to milk. Then about a month later I switched over to the sippy and it went a lot easier. I use the tall skinny Nuby without handles for her milk and the short stuby Nuby for her water and juice. She would always drink water from a sippy so I thought if I used the tall skinny one for milk then maybe she would think that was like a bottle. Good luck!

I had this issue with both my oldest DD, 13, and my youngest DD, 3. When it happened again with my youngest I asked her Pediatrician for advice. He said his oldest was the same and that it is not a big deal. Some people are just not milk drinkers. He suggested adding other types of dairy like yogurt, cheese and even ice cream on occasion to make sure she is getting her calcium. So that's what we did. Both she and my oldest are totally healthy.

Also, my youngest was already using a sippy cup for water and I ask if I should give her bottles of milk and he said absolutely not! It is more important developmentally that they be using a sippy then still drinking milk or formula.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

At 12 months her body doesn't need formula anymore. In fact, as long as she is eating something like cheese she no longer 'needs' milk either. Try diluted juice instead...once she is use to the sip cup you could try milk in it again. take care!
ps~might try her on a multivitamin.

I had the same problem with my little one when she was about that age. We switched to the Nuby Sports Sippers to help her transition to the sippy cups off the bottles. It's kind of in between a bottle and a sippy. Took about a month to fully transition, but she did really well with it. You can find them at Walmart or Target.

I wouldn't stress about it too much. My son wasn't completely off the bottle til about 15-16 months. He wouldn't drink more than a few sips from any kind of sippy (I tried a LOT of them!). I knew he needed the milk, so I didn't push it too much. I just kept offering the sippy until he finally started drinking from it.

I wouldn't push it. Give her the bottle back and try it again later. My oldest wouldn't drink milk after nursing for 2 years, so I substituted with yogurt. She finally started to drink chocolate milk at age 5.

Try the "born free" brand sippy cups. you can get them online at amazon or at a whole foods store. My daughter didn't like formula out of anything else when we stopped the bottle.

The nipple is soft like a bottle nipple. And you can remove the handles on the cup so it still looks like a bottle. Also they have a hard nipple that you can transition to after a few months. She used the hard nipple one from about 15 months until 2 years. We finally took the cups away and she drinks milk from a regular sippy with no spout.

this was the only way I got her off bottle and onto sippy with milk.

Each child is an individual- I'm sure you know that better than most! There's no "rule book" that says she has to be off the bottle at 12 months. It will do her absolutely no harm to stay on a bottle for a while. If she were 24 mo. that would be different as there would be dental concerns, but she's still a baby! If it comforts her, let her have the bottle. My 14 mo. old still has a bottle am & sometimes pm. She just doesn't want a sippy cup when she first wakes up. She take a sippy for all her other beverages all day. Also, she has been sick once & has had some tough teething bouts where the bottle was all that comforted her. Your kids will continue to do things on their own schedule. You just have to customize a little for each one. She'll get off the bottle soon- don't worry. By the way, I'll bet she's potty trained way before him!

I second the Nuby sippy cups. You can find them at Wal-Mart relatively cheap. That's the only one that my son would take milk in coming off the bottle since the spout is most like a bottle nipple.

I agree with Brenda but I just wanted to mention that we started out with the Nuby sippy cup. It is a sippy cup, but the top is soft and bendable, a little more like a bottle nipple.

I know this isn't exactly the same situation, but I nursed my b/g twins for a year and they wouldn't drink anything more than a sip or two of milk until I was completely done nursing. I decided that since they drank water and ate well at all other times, I wouldn't stress about the milk. They both ended up drinking lots of milk when I weaned them completely (which took about a month). I figured that a few weeks of not getting enough milk wasn't a big deal. Maybe you have to take the last bottle away? I know...easier said than done. Good luck!

when i switched my 12 month old from formula to milk she refused to drink milk. i asked my doctor about it she said they don't have to have milk. at 12 months they are getting their nutrition through real food. just be sure to give her other dairy through out the day. since my daughter LOVES cheese it was no big deal. my doctor said that kids do not need to replace their intake of formula for milk ounce for ounce. they should drink less milk than formula. i would put a little chocolate syrup in her cup and not worry about it. she is old enough to be off of formula and eating real food. and if she drinks a little milk great! if not no big deal.
by the way my daughter is now 3. i still put a tiny drop of chocolate syrup in her milk every morning, but she will have one or two big cups of milk everyday.
