12 Month Old Not Interested in Table Foods

Greetings All!
My, just turned, 1 year old son is still on jar foods. I distinctly remember my first born being off jar foods at 10 months. Is this odd? I have tried and tried, sitting him at the table when our family eats, giving him things that I know he'd enjoy, but he just wants no part of it! Is it the whole spoon thing? He currently nurses his jar food through feeders, which I thought were SO convinient, at the time... now I'm wondering if this is causing him to be behind on advancing to table foods. Can anyone help?

What can I do next?

I think I read somewhere that the whole point to starting baby food was to get the spoon assoication down. I dunno that might be cause for delay.Jar food is much better than it was in the past with no or very little preservitaves so I have no problem using jar foods and I dont have the time to make them. Just try it and see if he will do the spoon thing. Dont give up! Good luck.

My 15 month old has a severe gag reflex. I used one of those feeders for a while and she would NOT attempt to get used to the spoon. I took the feeder away and within 2 weeks she accepted the spoon. I never used jar food, I made my own so that switch did not have to occur. I would make one switch at a time instead of switching from the feeder and to table food.

I would take the feeder away and go to a spoon and when that transition is complete, switch to table food. My 1 and 2 yr old love to eat raw carrots, celery (remove the strings) and cucumbers. Those are their favorite snacks. They can feed themselves and do not need a spoon. My other kids always iked them too. Maybe that would work for you. Good luck.

My daughter is 12 months and still prefers baby food. With her it is a texture thing. She does eat with a spoon, though. I am gradually trying different table foods with her, I just squish them up. She still nurses, as well. Why rush her? The jar foods are healthy. Switching to spoons... try to get the real baby spoons. The ones with the rubber tips are harder to feed with. I don't know why they came out with those, but I have never cared for them. I have two boys as well, 12 and 13 and I didn't like them back then, either. Good luck, take it one day at a time and it will all be okay. No two babies are the same and we have to learn as we go.

Yes you are correct in the assumption. You should never have used the food in those feeders. I am a mother of 2 and my children never used those as my mother strongly advided me against them as the baby/child needs to be able to use the spoon. You might want to try to let him use a spoon and let him get down right dirty. Don't use jar foods and cook the vegtables and cut them so he can use his fingers. I have a very picky son as well and it can be a texture thing to him. It will take a little while but he soon will realize if he wants to eat he will eat what you offer him in the way you offer it to him. I wish you luck!!!!!
