12 Month and Eating

My daughter is now 12 months and about to start daycare. I am trying to prepare her to eat the food they will provide to her. I have always had problems with her wanting to eat. I have always had to make her eat. She just wants to play with it and makes a huge mess every meal. I'm worried that she will have issues with the meals at daycare and not get enough food if they just let her do what she wants. Does anyone have any ideas about how to help her feed herself? She likes solids and meals but does not like to feed herself. Also, does anyone have any ideas of how to get her to use silverware? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

oh man..my kid is 2.5 and is just starting to get the 'hang' of using silverware properly. At that age, its hard. they pretty much only use their hands. I wouldnt be expecting a 12 month old to use a spoon or fork. ..the mess is because they are exploring "How many holes can I put this pea in???" dont worry too much...she knows how to eat so if she is hungry...she will eat.
If you want less mess, try sticking with goldfish, fruit loops, cheerios, nothing with dip, or goo.

most 12 mnth olds cant use silverware. my son just started using it two months ago and he is 20 mnths old. and making a mess with meals is how they eat. Its how they learn. any daycare should know this I wouldnt worry about it

Dear A.,
See Nourshing Traditions cookbook for great ideas. Please take a look at what they serve there- no junk, no sugar.

I had similar concerns when my LO started daycare. She will learn soon how to feed herself there, don't worry. You may ask the caregivers to "encourage" her to eat, and they can help her a little bit. All kids that age make a mess when they eat. That is how they learn. Just let her explore with the food.

The daycare needs to spoon feed her in a high chair, period...God knows you are paying them enough..You need to speak up if they are telling you they won't...Most one year olds are not going to feed themselves a meal since their attention is on everything but...The last thing you need is to pick her up after a stressful day and hear "oh, she wouldn't eat today"....Um, I don't think so.
