Hi everyone. I have a 11 month old that will be 1 year old in a few weeks. He no longer likes puree or mashed food.Or I should say refuses to eat it but hitting the spoon away or covering his mouth. He only likes food he can feed himself like cheerios, and he is getting picky about what he does feed himself. He tries to rip off his bib and sometimes screams about sitting down to eat. A little background on him. He is on meds for reflux, reglan(which can make him sleepy) and Prevacid. He also has asthma. He gets fussy like he is hungry and then we go to eat and he doesnt want to eat. He was a really big eater but not eating as much as he did and starting to refuse the bottle. Is this normal? Am I overthinking it too much? any tips? Is he eating enough?

I just wanted to add this in after one reply: he is behind on his transition to eating toddler food. He started late due to not being in a home and did not want to transition our dr said not to take him off stage 2 until recent.

What can I do next?

My son has reflux and this sounded JUST like him! He is going to be 3 in a few weeks and i will say about 6 months ago he really started to eat "normally". We would try and force him to eat but it ended up bad...him screaming, us frusterated. his dr told me that he WILL eat when he is hungry. It was nerve racking for me cause he would go almost 2 days sometimes without eating food...maybe a few bites here or there but no meals. He would drink milk and water/juice but not food. We put him on Zantac and he is eating like crazy...i have to stop him now! It was scary and made me nervous but his weight was always on target and he had energy and was healthy.
One thing that i did in the mornings to get some protein in him was a protein shake... i would blend fruits with milk some ice and protein powder. Sometimes i would add a yogurt instead of protein powder. Maybe try that. He thought it was a treat and LOVED it!
Good luck.

Hi D.

I have a 3.5 year old and a 1yr. old who is also on Reglan and Prilosec. He is also on a nebulizer for viral asthma. He is also not eating well and I think it's the transition before he begins walking. We see a gastrointologist and she says he will grow out of it when he begins walking. Maybe try giving him more finger foods I know it's messy but that's all my son will eat. Good luck

Does he have teeth? I ask because my son had molars at 11 months and was eating solid food that I cooked until it was very soft and he'd feed himself while I was feeding him.

See if he'll eat if you give him a food item he can feed himself and then you get a spoon for yourself and feed him in between his bites of his food.

Does Reglan affect the appetite in adults? If it does it may be whats affecting him.

Change the variety of foods you feed him, introduce new foods and set it in front of him, let him feed himself.

Hi D.. Developmentally your baby is normal. I'm surprised that you have been giving him babyfood this long. He is screaming to you that he is a toddler and ready for a toddler diet. Two of my three kids did the same thing only earlier. My 8 year old wanted to eat the scrabled eggs and oatmeal he saw his big brother eat when he was only 6 mos. I let him. My daughter refused babyfood at a young age as well. Unfortunately, she is still on a toddler diet at 6! I recommend finding all of the great fruits and veggies, meats, cheese, etc that will build a healthy diet. Say goodbye to babyfood days.

An 11 month old should be eating tiny cut up pieces of table food...just what you and your husband eat. Our doctor said, at that point, our son's windpipe was about the size of a dime and to start out with pieces no larger than that. Just keep offering him what you eat and see how that goes...

Hi-My 14 month old went through the same thing when transitioning from purees to solids at about 11-12 months. It lasted about 2 weeks, but I kept trying to give him what we ate, but in tiny bites. He now eats everything (veggies, fruit, meat). He eats better than my 3 year old. Keep trying to give him soft solid foods that has flavor and I'm sure he will be eating well again soon. Gavin also has reflux and he should be weaned off his meds by next month. Good luck.
