My 11 month old daughter has had eczema since she was 5 months old and I feel as she gets older, her eczema is getting worse. I've tried aquaphor, A&D ointment, baby aveeno eczema cream and baby wash and my pediatrician even gave me a prescription for her that contained hydro cortisone cream and nothing has worked. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

What can I do next?

Have you considered any food allergies? It's very possible that it could be causing the eczema..especially since she probably started solids around the same time the rashes started appearing?

My son has bad eczema too and I use a lotion called vani-cream. It doesn't make it go away, but it helps keep it under control. You can order it online.

I haven't tried it yet, but I've read that cheeky baby butter by babybearshop works wonders.

Hi J.,

I have eczema myself however I didn't get it until I was 15 or so and I use Eucerin cream to this day. It's gentle enough for my kids which I have passed the eczema on to. My son who's 6 gets the patches of dry skin mostly on his hands. My daughter, 4 , has it a bit worse. She gets it on her rear end, arms, back of her knees and the folds in her elbows. She gets VERY itchy. I have found that putting baby oil on them after baths has helped tremendously. However, with the weather turning warmer be careful to put a high SPF (UVB/UVA) sun block as baby oil tends to act as an accelerant for burning. I understand your baby is just under a year but this link may be helpful to you. It's geared for ages 6-12 but has helpful info on eczema.

Good Luck to you and don't worry - they usually grow out of it.

I have three children and all of them have been through bouts of eczema. They went to the dermatologist and he recommended an allergist. The number one cause of eczema is an allergy. At your daughter's age they would test her for allergies by taking blood. Check with your pediatrician also. they might be able to order the allergy testing. My youngest will be 1 on June 21st and the pediatrician is going to order allergy testing with her 1 year old blood work. If you do decide to have the blood work done I would keep a diary of what she eats for a couple of days to see what the common thing is. My little one is noww totally off formula and with the end of the formula the eczema stopped. She has been off formula for a week and the eczema is gone. I found that Cortaid 10 helped with the itching, but until you find out what is causing it is is really not going to go away.
My 5 year still has bouts of it, but we know what she is allergic to and when she has a lot of it the eczema flairs up. My 7 year old is allergic to soy and once I got him off his formula it went away.
Another thing you could do is give her a dose of Benedryl if it gets really bad. It helps with the itching and the inflamation. My 11 month old takes 3/4 tsp and it really helps, especially in the heat which makes the itching worse. Please feel free to send me a message with any other questions. Good Luck!!

There is a miracle product, but its hard to find. Its called pure baby eczema cream.

You can read reviews here:
http://www.epinions.com/reviews/Pure_Eczema_Care_For_Baby

I was able to find it at Babies R Us in W. Hartford for awhile and then it disappeared. Then I was able to get it on their website. And that disappeared.

Now, I found it on ebay here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Pure-Baby-Eczema-Care-42292_W0QQitemZ...

I'm not sure why its so hard to come by. The stuff really does work great. Maybe if you do some poking around online you can find more info about it.

I also found it here:
http://hardtofindbrands.com/cf/products.cfm?search=alpha&...

Also, you mentioned using baby aveeno...Have you tried the baby aveeno SOOTHING RELIEF lotions and baby bath? I found them to work better than the regular baby aveeno products.

Also, have you tried an elimination diet to see if that causes the flare ups. For example, a friend of mine's daughter had eczema explosions whenever she had anything with apple in it.

My son has food allergies, and eliminating eggs and dairy helped tremendously.

Best of luck to you!

I have personal experience with this! My second daughter (who is now 18 mo.), went through this for the first 6 months of her life. I would take her to the Doctor frequently, because it looked so uncomfortable. They recommended Aquaphor, A&D, Heavy cream, etc. none of which helped. Her dry, itchy, redness never went away, and even started to become irritated by the lotion.

Finally after pleading with the Pediatrician, they prescribed Hydrocortizone cream. I think it works more as an anti-itch, but I can not tell you how much it helped her! Within two weeks her skin was clear, soft and beautiful. And most importantly, she was comfortable! If your original prescription did not help, I would suggest asking for a stronger percentage. Also, keep persistant with it. Even if you think it is starting to heal, keep putting it on. If this doesn't work I think there are also specific creams prescribed for eczema. Don't be afraid to bring it up to your doctor again.

Good Luck! I know it is hard to see a baby go through this.

Hi J.,
My daughter, now 3.5, has very sensitive skin and it was especially sensitive when she was an infant. Sometimes I look back at photos and I can't believe how red and inflamed her skin was. What worked for her was to use a cream prescribed by her doctor to get the skin back to "normal" (in her case, our doctor prescribed Mometasone, I think that's the name, or close to it), then I would have to slather (and I mean, SLATHER) her in Aquaphor several times a day. Also, I use only laundry detergent that has no fragrance or dyes (either Purex Free or All Free) and after doing a full wash with detergent, I would do a whole second wash and rinse cycle with just water to get every last bit of detergent out of the clothes. These days I can get away with just doing a second rinse and not necessarily a whole second wash cycle but it took quite a while to get to that. All of our clothes would have to be washed in a similar way too as she was always rubbing up against our clothes. Aquaphor also makes a wash I believe that you can use in the bath, and I always would have to rinse her well after a bath so that all the soap residue would be washed off.

Good luck!

I didn't read all of your responses so someone may have suggested this already. After a warm (not too warm) bath I cover my son with Eucerin intense repair creme - NOT lotion. This creme has worked really well for him, especially after a bath. After a couple nights his skin is perfect! It's so hard when something's bothering them and nothing you try seems to work. Good luck.

Please don't put a prescription cream on your daughter. The eczema is caused from something she is ingesting (eating). My son had eczema on his elbows at 6-8 months old (he's now 4). I took him to my naturopath to detect intolerances. She did a blood test and found out that his #1 intolerance was Coconut! Coconut?? Well, it's part of the Palm family and the formula that I was using at the time contained Palm Oil! (he also had dairy, egg, wheat and corn intolerance as well - but I rarely gave him that back then anyway).

So, the eczema might be an allergy to a food, but it might be an intolerance also.

I would either start eliminating some foods to see if that helps or seek out a naturopath who can get to the bottom of it.

It is true that when your skin has a problem, 98% of the time it's what you are eating. This is what my naturopath told me.

It's time to start healing your daughter by eliminating those foods that are toxic to her.

Eczema is almost always the body's way of detoxing when it has gut/intestinal issues. Heal the gut and the eczema resolves. Try eliminating dairy and wheat and giving her soft cooked veges and homemade soups/broths. A trip to the health food store for dairy free and wheat free products will alleviate some of your fear of doing it once you see what alternatives are available. Also, it is very important to rebuild a healthy gut environment by supplementing her diet with probiotics- the healthy bacteria that live in the gut. Look for an infant formula that has bifidobacterium and is in the refridgerated section of the store. Also ask someone at the store to show you a child formula of omega 3's and DHA-(AKA cod liver oil)- that you can supplement her with. Nordic Naturals is a good brand. The omega 3's act like a fire extinguisher to sooth any inflammed tissues in the body- gut or surface skin. In my chiropractic practice I have seen this formula work wonders for little ones and adults. God Bless, A. C.

Hi J.
I to have a daughter with eczema. She is now 15 months old and got it at 1 month. Believe me I have tried everything. Every cream imaginable. I did also go see a naturopath and he helped my daughter. It is all about the imune system. Also try wetting your daughter's face and immediately apply vaseline (regular old fashion vaseline greasy one) over it. The water hydrates the skin and the vaseline helps keep the moisture in. My daughter still has it but is much beter than she used to be

Dear J.:
I have a family riddled with eczema and allergies! (4 1/2 year old girl and a 2 1/2 year old boy)....this is what has worked for us..(so far)
We only use Cetaphil soap and cream immediately after bath....also, I only only only wash our clothes, linens etc in perfume free, dye free, and scent free detergents. Sometimes if we are having a bad flare up(which is rare), I will bathe them in the Aveeno Oatmeal bath and then apply the steroid cream prescribed by our pediatrician.

The key for us was to get rid of EVERYTHING that had perfumes, dyes, and scents. Remember,if it smells good, it has ingredients that will probably aggravate sensitive skin.
Good luck and I hope this helps!

There are botanically based baby skin care products by a company called ARBONNE that have provided amazing results. I always recommend getting them through www.forthecause.net, as this is a conscious group who "gives back". You can order on line at full price or buy at 35% off if you become a consultant for a $29 annual fee (as there is no need to pay full price).

The products and testimonials for helping with eczema are really incredible. I used the wash and baby oil on my own daughter's skin and had results the next day.

There is no mineral oil in any of the products. Worth a chance!!!

My son, now 16mo, had bad eczema on his arms as an infant. I was going to a pediatric chiro to treat his reflux at the time. The homeopathic dr. in his office took a look at him & said the areas of eczema corresponded to problems in his gut. I wind up finding out he's allergic to milk soon after that. Maybe u should try a naturopathic route. According to chinese medicine the eruptions on the skin are clues to where there are problems inside the body. I didnt use any chemical based products i.e. vaseline, aquaphor, etc. I lathered him in lavender oil w/ drops of chamomile oil added. Trader JOes has a great lavender body oil. I wonder if calomine lotion will help. Anyway his eczema slowly dissappeared & he hasnt had any bad spots, just basic itchiness (dry skin).

have you tried modifying her diet? dairy and wheat would be the first two i would start with. you have to completely eliminate that food for at least two weeks for it to be out of her system. try one food at a time so it's not so daunting. READ all labels. both dairy and wheat sneak into foods where you don't expect them. if she is nursing you'll have to cut that food out of your diet too. if she is on formula you'll have to get a dairy free formula and soy isn't necessarily better either. ug! i have a wheat allergy and my daughters both have dairy sensitivities. it's a lot of work but worth it to be healthy.

Look to the gut for answers to eczema. Check out Keeping your Child healthy with Chinese Medicine by Bob Flaws to learn more about why the skin reflects what is going on with the intestines. Chinese 5 element theory is a very interesting and effective way of looking at heatlh. It's thousands of years old and it really works!

Western medicine is confirming what Chinese medicine has known for years about skin issues. Probiotics are helpful ( work on the gut level), also you want to rule out food allergies. Bob Flaws has a great chapter in his book about introducing foods in the right way in order to avoid tirggering food allergies.

These non drug approaches do not have dangerous side effects.
Creams and lotions do not get to the core of the problem.
This approach may take more effort than buying some new product from a multilevel marketing group, but it will set you and your child up for a lifetime of better health.
Good luck!

Hi J.,

Arbonne’s Baby Care line is second to none in my opinion. I can absolutely swear by the products. I had been trying to find something to help my (then) two sons with their eczema as nothing else had worked. I tried over the counter things (Eucerin, Aquafor, Caldesene on diaper rash, Lotrimin, and more), direct sales products (Melaleuca for instance), and prescriptions (ointment and oral). Nothing worked and it had gotten to the point where my oldest had dry patches like the elbow patches on a man’s sports coat and rashes on his stomach. My now middle son had what looked like rashes all over him especially on his lower back and upper bottom, diaper rash every day from the day he was born to the point it would bleed, and a huge spot on his left cheek that would result in blood everywhere after every nap because he would scratch it even in his sleep. I had become so afraid that 1) it would never go away and 2) even if it did, he was going to be left with a horrible scar.

A friend told me about Arbonne’s Baby Care line and I showed the ingredient lists to our pediatricians. Both were very happy with the products and liked that they did not have any fragrances added to them.

I began using Arbonne’s Baby Care line (wash, lotion, sunscreen, and diaper rash cream) and their Rejuvenating Cream. I could not believe how quickly I saw results!! Both boys’ skin cleared up quickly and beautifully. I read about a lot of parents who talk about what they use that works but they have to apply the lotion twice a day. I can’t imagine having to hold my children down for that every day. That is something else I love about the products is that now that their skin is cleared up, I only use the lotion when they are starting to look a little dry or if they start to get a bit of a rash which I think has happened twice in the past year and a half if not two years.

The wash works so well that I once put regular children’s soap on my now 7 ½ year old and he immediately opened the curtain and said, “That was NOT Arbonne!” I asked how he knew and he said because his skin began itching as soon as he started washing with the washcloth. I use the products on all three of my sons regardless of their ages and I swear by the sunscreen just as much. They are in the pool at least 3 times a week and every summer they end up with very nice tans. They don’t burn AT ALL.

Please feel free to check out the products at http://APerfectMoment.MyArbonne.com. In the fourth row of thumbnail pictures you will see the one that says Baby at the top. Click there and you will be able to see most of the products. The lotion isn’t showing up right now because they are unavailable at the moment but if you look at the products that are showing and decide it is something you would like to try, I would be happy to send you a sample pack. Feel free to email me at ____@____.com

Best of luck to your little one.

Hi J.,
I feel your pain. Both my daughter and son suffered from severe eczema for years. Finally, my sons day care provider told me about Elocon. It is a prescription steriod but it cleared their eczema right up. They still ocassionally have flare ups but I would say 90% better than what it was before. His doctor didn't want to prescribe it at first because he was so young but I did get the prescription for my daughter(9 yrs old at the time) and tried it for my son. When my son was 1 1/2 I started applying it once a week mixed with an equal portion of vaseline. On the other days I used aquaphor or just vaseline after bathing and once more during the day after about four weeks it was under control. For my daughter I applied every other day as needed.

Talk to your pediatrician and maybe consult a pediatric dermatologist.

It is a little on the expensive side, however you can get it from Mothernature.com and it was a lot less expensive than the California Baby website. Hope it works! Good thing is by a year old it all went away....but I notice even now if I don't put lotion on her she starts with the chap cheeks......As for a cream I stuck with Cetaphil lotion for her whole body after baths. One thing to remember is that eczema is a sign of allergies....and sure enough my daughter was later diagnosed with a TREE NUT allergy...and some seasonal allergies...so keep an eye on your daughter.Good Luck and let me know how it goes.

Hi there
I have 4 children. My oldest (now 13) had excema that cleared up instantly once I changed his diet. He was allergic to dairy, eggs and wheat. Seems like a lot, but it made a huge difference.
I then had another daughter who was fine, then had twins. One twin was fine and the other had the MOST severe excema I have yet seen to date. It was awful. His skin would break out everywhere and he would scratch until it bled.
I took him to many specialists and found that, again, it was allergies. This kid was "intolerant" to a huge amount of foods: dairy, wheat, eggs, meats, soy, nuts, etc. I had to strip his diet down to rice and beans, avocados, fruits and veggies, etc. simple foods. It worked!

I am totally convinced almost all excema will clear up if you change the diet. With an 11 month old it is almost certainly going to be dairy and wheat. Try to get rid of those- a soy alternative or if you are still breast feeding to stop eating those foods yourself and see what happens!

**I also found the body shop has a hemp cream that was GREAT for mild excema breakouts!
Good luck and if you want to talk more I am at:

Hi J.,

I'm sorry your baby is going through this. My son starting getting it as an infant too. Since your daughter's seems to be pretty severe, I would say that it's time to move past trying to treat with creams and go on to finding the cause, which is typically an allergy. I would suggest asking your baby's doctor for a referral to a pediatric allergist.

Hi J. -

I have a great product line that will help aleviate the eczema. My neighbor has it really bad, as did my boss. I gave them both a small bottle of lotion called Renew and it cleard it right up. They love it and rave about it!

This lotion plus over 400 products are available via a wholesale wellness company, online. They do not use any chemicals or toxins when making these products. They are better for our families and environment because they use natural ingredients. All the chemicals and additives most companies use in the creation of the products are not very good for us or the environment. Oprah has been doing lots of show's lately on the effects of these products.

I switch to useing these products over 10 yrs ago, due to my childerns asthma and allergies. No more nebulizers, or inhailers! Yippee!

I can show you how to get these products online, with the best part - if you dont like them for any reason you can get a full refund! That is why I decided to give them a try. I had nothing to lose except the dry skin (my husband had alligator skin), breathing machines and lots of stress with children always being ill. The products even helped my sons ADHD w/o meds!

I'd love to show you how these can help your son's eczema - pop me a note or give me a call.
