11 Month Old Will Not Drink Formula/Milk Help

Hello All...

My son will be 11 months this weekend. He was previously drinking 3 8oz bottles a day and eating 3 small meals. In the last 3 weeks, he has cut 3 teeth (top and bottom). He has always been very active and has not enjoyed sitting still for a bottle, so he has been somewhat easy to wean. Three weeks ago, he began taking an hour to drink 1-2 ozs (the formula would literally spoil while he would take the time to drink it). I have tried everything (giving him a larger nipple size, giving him breaks) all to no avail. I brought him to the doctor and he assured me he was not sick. His oz intake has decreased dramatically. He will take a sippy cup (straw or regular) but prefers water. He has plenty of wet diapers, but the only way I getting formula/milk oz's into him is by mixing it with his food (he is obviously eating more). My doctor gave me the go-ahead to give him whole milk and milk related products. He loves cheese and yogurt, but still will not take Milk or Formula out of cup. I can get about 11-14 oz's in (mostly by putting it in his meals) and I am just worried because he is my first child and my Mother-In-Law (who watches him and has a heart of gold-but also worries) thinks he should be taking at least 24 oz's up until he is a year. (she cannot believe he is not drinking from a bottle anymore) How many oz's should an 11 month old take in? He loves water, so he is well-hydrated. I am just looking for reassurance that I am not depriving my son of any nutrients. All advice will be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

i just wondered have you tried other "types" of milk
I know i was allergic when wias young, they got somany other types of milks that are ok for a baby/toddler these days
They have soy, or soy free, they have an almond milk, which actually worked for me, they have rice milk too.
try a whole food store, they usually know what is ok safe wise for a lil kid inthat area, of how sensitive is with digestion onthe insides.
i would say rice milk, as babies eat ric ein almsot alltheir foods growin gup.
consult your pediatrision in this reguard to given your child ric emilk, See if that is an ioption, even add alil "water" if neede to it to dilute if youthink its to thick. Check the ingredentns on vitiums they get.
you can do nursery water with rice milk, zap for 10-20 seconds. and give your child that.
some kids likeit some dont

You can not force the issue. Try soy milk if he does not like regular milk. He does get calcium from it. I would try the vanilla flavor. I had a similar dilemma when my son was a little younger and did not want formula any longer. Yo baby yogurt is good and has a lot of nutrients. See how he does with the soy milk if he drinks it. I would say probably 24 oz is good. It is great he does not want the bottle anymore. another thing to do is to may be put a little bit of milk and more water. Increase the milk a little every day and decrease the water. May be he has to get used to the taste. Good luck. You sound like a great mom and sounds like you are on the right track.

Don't know if this is gonna help you but when my 2yr. old was a baby she always got sick from the formula and the doctors said she was fine but being a mother I knew something wasn't right, so at 11 months they finally listened to me and put her on lactaid, she is lactose and tolerant, however she can eat cheese and yogurt and have no problem but any other dairy product she gets sick,(diaherrea, and vomiting). Just something to consider. Hope you get the help you are looking for. Good Luck.

I think as long he drinks a lot of water its great. Let him get the nutrients from yogurt & cheeses. At least he's not the child who will only drink juice. Has he tried soy or almond milk? Soy is a great milk alternative but check with pediatrician first. One of the girls I care for is lactose intolerant & only drinks soy. I've compared the labels and its got less sugar & more protien.

You're learning this important lesson earlier than most of us----you can't make a kid eat or drink if they don't want to! Offer other things with the nutrition he needs, and don't worry too much. Their preferences change daily sometimes, so just keep offering. He's getting nutrition and fluids, so he's good.

Would you like to be forced to eat or drink something? Probably the answer is, NO. Exactly the same thing is with kids. The more you force something into them, the less expected respond or reaction you will get. There is no a standard rule for all kids that you have to follow. Unless the is a medical reason, you do not have to worry about your child. Alternatives are, other types of milk, dairy products and regular meals. My young child barely drinks 20 oz of formula a day and my old one loves the yogurt smooth and milk, but do not eat to much, lately. These are all stages kids go through. Both of them are healthy and perfectly fine. You are doing a fine job just let your son be.
