I agree w/Stephani L. Sounds like it's teething related.
My 11 month old wakes around 5-6am almost every night and coughs for a minute or two then goes back to sleep and I don't hear anything else. Anyone else have this issue? I never have to go in to check on her because she quits before I have to get out of bed.

Is she teething? My 16 month old generates alot of saliva and it ends up in his throat and he is prone to cough more at night when it drains.
Saliva probably builds up in her mouth... during the night, and then due to sheer volume, it then trickles down his throat and makes her cough... because she is not 'swallowing' it consciously, during the night.
My son sometimes did that.
Or teething... which also produces more saliva.
But if anything... try observing her at this time... to see what is going on.
So, BEFORE it happens, wake yourself up... and go to her room and wait... to see what is happening.
That is what I did with my son... then in his case, I saw/realized it was a bunch of saliva, making him sort of gag/cough during his sleep. Or he'd sleep with his mouth/lips open and I"d see saliva drool on his sheets/pillow where his mouth was.
all the best,
Susan
Could be teething as the other moms said.... just wanted to add that if the allergie count is high where you are living that has been causing a lot of issues even with people who do not suffer from allergies. My daughter (who is 4 years old) coughs one or two times every time she naps/sleeps. I called the doctors office and they said that if there are no other syptoms that morethenlikely it is allergies causing the problem. In a week or so hopefully all that allergie stuff has settled and it will no longer be a problem.
Try a little honey. Works for coughs and she IS old enough to have some. It will help her sleep too. 1 tsp.
Extra saliva from teething or the air conditioner can make anyone a little dry and have a tickle in their throat. If your little one does it every night just once or twice I'd say it's normal continued coughing then would be of great concern. I'd just keep track and see if it increases if not I'd say your little one is being very normal.
My kids now once in a while not being ill cough from throat being dry or since drain a little some days when we have those high heat indexes and air problems in Ga.
