11 Month Old Stopped Sleeping Through Night

My son, 11 months old, has never slept as well as my daughter at night... She slept from 8pm to 8am from 7 months old! But, he did start sleeping from around 830pm to 430 or 5am at around 9 months, would wake up at that time then I would nurse him and he'd go back to sleep until 8am. Now, since he had a stomach virus around 2 weeks ago, and was up through the night vomiting etc during that time, he has stopped sleeping through the night again. He is no longer sick, but for the past 2 weeks, he wakes up every 2 hours or so! A very fussy type cry! I can't seem to see any teeth cutting through, but it does sound like a teething/pain type fussy cry... But would that last over 2 weeks?? I've tried letting him cry it out for 20 min at a time for 2 days in a row... But he continues to whale, so I stopped that! I'm at wits end....! Help!

Could it be His molars? Would he be in pain from that this long? Mt daughter showed no signs of teething w her molars... What are symptoms? He fusses and rolls around with eyes closed trying to find a comfortable position to fall back to sleep-- but cant seem to without me nursing him or sometimes the pacifier will work .. But then wakes again rolling around in 2 hours!

What can I do next?

Is he really back to normal in terms of his stomach? I'm wondering if his gut flora was wiped out, and he's having some stomach cramps and/or if he's more gassy than usual. From your description, it sounds like he's uncomfortable.

If you think his stomach is still not quite right, you might try some probiotics. My ped always recommended this after any stomach virus (and also after antibiotics). He recommended Culturelle - 1/2 of one adult capsule sprinkled in food for a few days.

It could be his tummy still, or it could be that he is unsure if it will start hurting again like it did, and he is comforted by you. I would try some Hyland's Colic pills. These will help with gas and upset tummy and they give him the relief he needs to sleep. Also, I agree with the probiotics.

Secondly, my son did this a couple of times that ended up with teeth that I never saw coming in. He was fussy for a couple of weeks then was good, and a while later I noticed, oh, a tooth, or 3. So, yes, this could be teething too. Give him some tylenol and maybe some Hyland's Teething tablets. Usually, I could tell which one it was by which medicine worked better, colic pills or teething pills. They both make the baby feel better though.

Good luck!

I am so sorry! I was sleep deprived for most of my son's early life!
The virus messed with his sleep patterns and it's going to take a while to fix them. If you think he is teething give him some Tylenol before bed. He could just be going through separation anxiety, as it about now that it Clair's up.
Right now letting him cry for 20 mins before going to help him has just taught him to cry for 20 mins. I hate cry it out. I could never do it either!

What usually happened with us is another event happened and kept him up really late. He would then be so tired his schedule would change again and he might sleep through those wake up times and reset.
All I can say is he is probably not sick and I hope you get some rest!

Whale -- big water mammal
Wail -- hard crying

Sorry but the bad spelling on MP gets to me.

Anyway do not go and pick him up. If it sounds like he is in pain give him some Tylenol or Motrin. Then lay him back down and rub his back, or get him something like a Glo-worm to help him soothe back to sleep. If you decide to let him cry it out then don't pick him up when he hits a certain pitch -- that will only encourage him to hit that pitch sooner because he knows that pitch makes you come running. Hopefully when he figures out that waking up and crying doesn't get him hugs and cuddles he will learn to just fall asleep on his own.
