11 Month Old Pooping All Day????

For the last couple days my 11 month old has had a poopy diaper with every diaper change. Very loose poops too, sometimes almost watery. He's not eating anything differently, he has 2-3 6oz jars of food 25-30+ oz of formula and snacks daily. I've tried water and pedialyte to keep him hydrated but he's not acting any differently and doesn't seem to be bothered by it. He's starting to get diaper rash from it but my biggest concern is how much he's going. I can't figure it out. He does sometimes get like that when he's teething but I don't see anything come in. Any advice from anyone would be great! Thanks!

What can I do next?

He's ready for more solid food it sounds like. Also, make sure you're not giving him a lot of fruit juices or apple sauce; apples are full of fiber and they go right through my three and a half year old; she has 2 slices of apples and she's stinking up the joint. Good luck!

Hi Beki,

Your son's probably picked up a mild gastrointestinal virus, which should run it's course in a few days. Rice, apple sauce, bananas, and oatmeal can help to bind him up a bit, but don't overdo it or he can become constipated. Avoid giving him high-fiber fruits such as plums, apricots, and peaches until his bowels firm up again, and avoid fruit juices. Keep him hydrated (which you're already doing). It's a good sign that he's not irritated or acting differently.

If the diarrhea does not clear up by the weekend, you should schedule a visit to his pediatrician. Since you're probably introducing new foods at this age, it's possible that you've introduced a food that he's intolerant to (not necessarily allergic), and the loose bowels could be an indication of intestinal inflammation. If this is possible, back off of new foods for a few days until the diarrhea clears up, then reintroduce foods one at a time for 1 - 2 weeks to see if anything causes loose bowels again. Common culprits of food intolerance and/or allergy in children are wheat, corn, soy, dairy, tree nuts, peanuts, and fish.

BTW, you haven't given him any honey, have you? You should still be avoiding honey until after the first year, since it can cause botulism in the very young.

I would also see if you can get him to eat bread......plain bread.....if it's nice a soft, hopefully he will eat it....that will help with the diarrhea....I used to squish into a ball for my son to eat........it could be teething, and you just can't see it yet, or it could be a virus of some sorts....you never know......

Either way, keep him drinking water and keep an eye on him.....when my kids were small, destine was great for diaper rash....

Good Luck and take care.

Talk to your doctor.
A doctor once told me that a small child's kidneys can only process so much
liquid and then the output goes to poop.
Try cutting down on liquid and see what happens. Being
"Hydrated" is probably not as important as you think but talk
to a doctor.

Hi Beki! It sounds like your lil' man just has a tummy ache. No biggie. Do what you're doing and KEEP HIM HYDRATED! Outside of that, keep him clean so his tushy doesn't burn & it'll pass. Something like this I'd let go for a good week-10 days before thinking about the doc. Good luck!

(Side note, if his butt does get a little over-red from it, quit using wipes. They will burn. Just use a wash cloth with warm water to clean him. It's a bigger pain but a lot more comfortable for him).

He could have a stomach virus or he may need more carbs in his diet. Are you giving him cereal, crackers, bread... that will help his stomach also. Check with the doctor to see if they want to test him.

Good luck!
