I am at my wits end, my 11 month old son refuses to sleep through the night. He gets up 2 to 3 times a night. Looking for some ideas to help with this problem. Any suggestions are appreciated:)

My son didn't start sleeping through the night until around 14-16 month old, seriously. There was nothing wrong with him, he just wasn't a good sleeper. Then one day, bam he slept. I didn't do anything different...and believe me I had tried every sleep method, sleep training things I could get my hands on. My pediatrician said kids will sleep through the night when they are developmentally ready and there's very little parents can do to speed that up. Some kids sleep through the night at 6 weeks, some at 6 years. All is normal as long as you're giving him a good environment to sleep in.

My daughter woke up for a feeding at 1:00 am and 5:00 am until 12 months when she slept through the 5:00 and then at 13 months she slept through both. So, yes, it's hard, but I don't find this to be abnormal.

If babies are over-tired they actually sleep WORSE because they can't settle into a good sleep pattern.

Some kids are just better sleepers than other. I, unfortunately, breed crappy sleepers - my 4.5 year old has NEVER slept through the night and my 3 year old has maybe once or twice - I don't have high hopes for my 6 month old *sigh*

I have no ideas for you, but I wanted to sympathize! My son was 20mo before he started sleeping longer than 3-4 hours at a time, and he was waking 5-6 times per night until then. I don't know if it was coincidence, but putting him to bed at 7:30/8:00 was when he started sleeping better. I also found that he slept better at night on the days when he had a good nap.

Look through some different "sleep books" to see which method works with your thoughts and feelings. They'll all work if you commit to one and follow it completely. We chose to do cry it out with both of our kids and it worked beautifully for us. Though, my daughter was a very easy sleeper, whereas my son took about three weeks to really start sleeping through the night (but he was waking up every 45-60 minutes all night long, so we were desperate).

I feel your pain. My 9moth old twins dont sleep thru the night either. When they wake up I turn on a stereo in their room and for whatever reason the local country station helps them fall back asleep.
I think Gretchen K. has an excellent point, I have noticed that if my kids have taken at least two naps during the day they do sleep better
Good luck, I know how much sleep depervation for such a long period of time sucks.

I always checked for an ear infection when that happened. More often than not, that's what it was.

My son was never a good sleeper and didn't really start sleeping through the night until 15-16 mos. Those first year molars are a doozy so that could be part of the problem. Sometimes Infant Ibuprofen helped but obviously you can't give that every night :) Also, much like potty training, sleeping through the night is a developmental milestone and every child is different. My first, a girl, was sleeping through the night at 3 mos and I used all the same techniques with my little boy to no avail. Then at 15 mos, something kicked in! Hang in there, it gets better!

I highly recommend the book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child," by Dr. Marc Weissbluth.

My 3 1/2 year old does this. My older daughter did it until she was 7 1/2. Aside from getting a sleep study, I don't have much in the way of suggestions, just that melatonin helps get them to sleep. We've had numerous doctors suggest and okay that for my girls- neurologists, psychiatrists, chiropractors, and sleep doctors. Obviously, you should check with your own doctor about dosages, etc. before giving this. Some kids are just poorer sleepers. Co-sleeping is what saved some of my sanity because I can often comfort without having to get entirely out of bed.
