My 11 month ols son seems to not want to drink as much formula as he did even one month ago. He was on 6oz 4-5 times a day, but we went down to 5 oz 4 times a day just recently and he never finishes that. We give him vitamin d drops to make up what he is not getting. I was also thinking about starting to add an oz of whole milk to start weaning off formula. Do I have to wait till one year... He is so close in age... Thanks for your advice in advance!!

What can I do next?

That's pretty much what I did was start replacing formula at 11 months for my son. I did half and half of each and started gradually adding more milk with each week.

He is old enough to start milk but wouldn't replace formula with milk just yet. I am currently using stage 2 formula by enfamil called enfagrow. while my lil guy drinks from sippy cups and milk at 14 months I give him a bottle of it anight before bed :) What you are saying is not uncommon. Just make sure he drinks throughout the day to stay hydrated. Since he is on solid foods now the amount of fluid they drink does decrease a bit

This isnt uncommon, he is probably just letting you know that milk isnt what he is wanting anymore, he is ready for food. I would go ahead and slowly start mixing the milk. Start with 4oz of formula and 2oz of milk, after 2 days got to 3 of each, then 4 of milk and 2 of formula then just milk. So that within a week is is on milk only. I didnt do this with my first daughter and she hates milk. I did it with my 2nd daughter and she LOVES milk. They were both off of formula by there 1st birthday.....Just do this with the milk and give him good food and he will do great...

I agree with Tasha. I haven't heard the three year thing either and I have a three year old. They should start replacing formula or breast milk with solids at this point. I did the same thing with my three year old at that age; I refused to buy a new package of formula and starting mixing it in the whole milk. She is a perfectly healthy three year old at this point.

I have never heard the three year thing, but I am years out of this phase. Call your doctor and speak to the nurse, I am sure that you can clear up any questions you have about feeding!

Actually, it's recommended that toddlers have formula for the first THREE years of life because they don't get what they need from solids and whole milk. Give him formula first when he's hungry, only then should you offer solids and other liquids.

I havent heard of anything bad if you stop giving formula by age 1. As a matter of fact, my oldest son went off breastmilk at 9 months, and we went straight to soy milk until her turned 1, then weaned in cows milk. His pediatrician said it was just fine. just make sure your L. one gets plenty of healthy foods! I would ask your childs Dr if one month away from beigin 1 is still too soon for cows milk, but I think his cutting down on drinking is ok, tht just means hes satisfied with solid foods and needs less liquids :)

My little one is going on 11 months and we've been struggling with getting enough liquids in her. I still breastfeed, but she is only wanting to do that before naps and bedtime. I tried giving her formula in a sippy and she didn't want anything to do with it. I do give her a scoop to 2 scoops of formula with her cereal and veggies/fruit meals and give her a water cup.

I called the pediatrician asking if I could supplement the breastmilk with soy, coconut or regular whole milk. She said she'd prefer that I keep doing what I'm doing (Bmilk, formula in her cereal, and water cup) and try to get her to take more formula. She did NOT want me supplementing with the soy, coconut or whole milk yet.

She also said that she needed at least 18 oz of breastmilk or formula a day.

I hope this helps. I've decided to pump more often (even though I want to wean her soon) and put it in a sippy cup. Just make sure he doesn't get dehydrated and is getting the nutrition he needs.

Hi R., My son stoped breastfeed all of the sudden one day (he was 11 months old) we started him right on Vit D milk and he loves it! He'll drink 2-3 large sippy cups a day! My friend does half formula and half Vit D and he is 10.5 months old.
