So I made a mistake ugh!! So I did my husbands taxes on turbo tax, something I have done since we have been together, its simple easy to use, and cheap. Well this year got ahead of myself and made mistake. He was unemployed for while. Once I got his W2 from his previous job, and his unemployment, I flied as we need the money. Well I checked mail and there is a 1099 R for his retirement. I quickly called H & R block and spoke with woman who stated that I have to now do a 1040x. She said to wait until I get our refund back and then file it so that it will not hold up out refund. She said its confusing to do and offered to do 1040x for 100.00. Well I was like okay thanks we will see, printed out forms and its confusing. So if anyone has dealt with having to fill this out and has any info as to how, that would be great, not wanting to spend the 100 if we dont have to. I have looked at instructions and still confusing. Has anyone had to do this and figured it out on how? Any info would be great. Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

We always have our accountant do our taxes (because we own a business, so our taxes are fairly complicated), however one year I received a revised 1099 from my retirement account and we had to file an amended tax return. If all you need to file is a 1040x, I don't think it's necessarily that complicated. You have to file revisions by mail (not online). So, sit down with the 1040 you already filed, and put all of those items in the first column (where it says "original amount"). Then, simply add the amount listed on the 1099R you received in the "revised amount" of the 1040x. Add everything up like the form says, and then whatever your new adjusted income is, look that up on the tax table for the amount you owe. Unless it is a huge sum of money on the 1099, it probably won't throw you into the next tax bracket, and is unlikely to change the amount you owe all that much. Maybe wait for your refund, and then when you receive that, put your 1040x in the mail with a check for whatever you owe for that. It will take the IRS forever to deal with your revised return, so I think the advice to wait for your refund from your original filing before sending your revised return was good advice.

Honestly, $100 to fill out a 1040x seems like a LOT. It's only a 2 page form, and unless you're itemizing, it should be fairly straightforward, I would think.

My husband is a tax auditor. You have to wait until Feb 7, when these will be accepted, and you can do it through turbotax online. You can also go to the irs.gov website. There are instructions there: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdf . You can contact the IRS directly for help. Go to the website and click on Help and Resources tab. There's phone numbers there to their help desk.
He also says that if you amend your federal tax return, you will also need to file a state amended return.
Hope this helps!

ouch...$100 seems like a lot for completing a short form.

I would do it myself. Contact the IRS and ask for help. They will guide and help you!

Good luck!
