100.9, What Does It Mean?

My 14 m/o daughter came home tonight from the sitters and we played around and had a pretty good time together. We didn't eat till 7:30 (we usually eat an hour earlier). She has outgrown wanting to cuddle with me and generally pushes me away.

But tonight she let me cuddle with her. And she seemed kind of warm to me. I gave her a bath and she was extra shivery while I was drying her off. And she was thirsty, she went after an empty sippy cup from this morning in her room. I took her temp and it was 100.9. I gave her some tylenol and some water and now she's sleeping.

I know there are lots of bugs going around...anyone else's start out like this??? Tell me it's a cold and not the norovirus hurly bug. We did a vomitty thing two weeks ago that lasted two days and I may need to be committed if we are about to go through that again!!

I haven't noticed any coughing or runny nose. So I am scared that this is IT...do your kiddo's typically miss out on the stomach bugs that are going around once they have already recently had one??

What can I do next?

Our pedi would recommend that we not give tylenol for a low fever. She said the temp indicated that her white blood cells were doing their job and fighting off a virus or infection. However, if the baby gets fussy or the fever goes to 101 then give her the tylenol.

Depending on where you took the temp., if under the arm you should add a degree. My son did this about a week ago, he was fine all day then all the sudden he wanted to lay down (which is very unusal for him) i felt him and he was warm i took his temp and it was 103.6, he complained of his back and neck hurting him, he continued to run a fever for 48 hours, only thing that kept it down was alternating tylonol and motrin every three hours, then as quickly as it came it left, this started fri night, by mon i took him to the dr. and he said he had no clue why he did that, he was perfectly healthy, no sign of infection anywhere. Now i do remember also when he was younger (1st baby and all) everythime he ran a fever we ran to the er, and they said that babys temps are slightly higher at night then in the day time, just give the tylonol and motrin. I hope this helps you, good luck!!

I second what Gullie said. Low grades are nothing to worry about. Your daughter's body is doing what it's supposed to do, getting rid of yuckies :-) I'd hold off on the Tylenol, at least for a little bit, unless it spikes.
My #1 had a headache, 101.6, achy stomach and was kind of lethargic (for her). That was a Friday. I first took her temp around noon on Fri and it was gone by 2pm on Sat.
I held her as much as I could and we read lots and lots of books that day.

Normally a 100.9 means a slight temp, nothing to really worry about but there is a virus going around in kiddos. My son just had it and after he was over his cold he got an ear infection, but that does not mean your daughter will get one. The virus last about three days, just keep an eye on her and if her temp gets to high call your DR.

My son started running fever yesterday. Started out around 101 and last night I was up with him all night as he was at 105 and miserable. He ran 102-103 all day WITH Tylenol. I called the pedi, but they said he probably has a virus of some type - there are a LOT going around recently. The flu is nasty right now too. Just remember to breathe, kiss your little angel and have a glass of wine after she goes to bed!

I read your info about the temp, the shivers, the bath to warm her up, and I felt sick....My son 2 1/2 did this several months back. He wasn't feeling "well". He had a mild temp. all day, and if you've read the literature that I have, then you know that they tend to say-"don't over medicate". I felt he was o.k., and didn't give tylenol regularly-just when his fever started to increase. It wa time to get ready for bed and he was having his bath. He started to complain that he was soooo cold. I took him out and bundled him up, due to his shivers. I placed him into bed and we read some stories. Just before we said goodnight, I took his temp. His 1 ear read 102.9-I reached for the tylenol, and I heard him stop breathing. He turned blue, and I freaked! My husband freaked! He was limp, and not responding....we called 911. It seemed like forever, but only a minute or 2 later he started to breath again. It turns out that he had his first-and hopefully last-febrile seizure. It came about from the rapid spike in body temp. So of course I feel like a stupid mother, b/c I was trying to warm him to make him feel better, and almost killed him! I'm not trying to scare you, but with fevers, I've learned that warm baths are bad, medication is good, and never fall for the chills!
