10 Week Old Sleeping Too Much??

My son seems to sleep alot. He has been sleeping through the night but I'm afraid he's sleeping too much during the day also. Once we get up in the morning he'll go back down about an hour to an hour and a half later. Then he'll sleep for an hour or two be up for an hour and then go back down for a few hours. I try to keep him awake by playing/talking to him but he becomes cranky and the only thing that gets him to stop crying is falling asleep. ALot of the books I've read said he should be awake more during the day time hours. I'm worried is this normal? Is there anything you can recommend to keep him awake and not crying?

What can I do next?

I would say let him sleep. I fell into this too where I would try to keep my little one up. Eventually he wound up sleep deprived, cranky ALL the time, and couldn't nap very well or easily. He's wake up 5-6 times a night even by 4 months. I read a fabulous book: Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Dr. Weissbluth. It talks ALL about the sleep each child needs at certain ages. Once I read it and started following it, my son was able to take naps at regular times, and he only wakes once at night to eat. And he is super happy smiley until he gets tired.

A newer baby can't sleep too much. I'd let him sleep for as long as he wants. If you're really concerned about it and think it's definitely too much then follow your instincts and take him to the doctor for a check-up. At least bring it up to your doctor at your next immunization visit.

at that age, responding to his needs is number 1 (i think). if he is tired, let him sleep. To ease your mind, get the book "healthy sleep habits, happy child" by Marc Weis.....something. it is a great book for a first time mother and gives great insight on sleeping patterns a children. i can tell you that at that age (probably for at least 6 more months) your child will need to go to sleep between 1 and 2 hours after awaking. in fact, i would be surprised if your child can stay up more than two hours in a row. He/She probably needs three naps a day. However, if your gut makes you concerned about something, talk to your doctor because a mother always knows best.

Not at all! Both of my children slept a lot until about month 4. We used to say they slept the first 4 months of life. Your baby will slowly start staying up more and more!

Hi C., first off congrats on your new little one, my daughter is now 10 months and boy sometimes i wish she was still at that stage, when she was born up until 12 weeks old she slept 22 hours a day, only getting up to feed. I was concerned too but let her set her schedule and then by 3 months she fell into more of a routine, taking about 3 naps a day and being alert more, was assured nothing wrong with it from my doc, she was just playing catch up my doc said, he will be fine as long as he doesnt have his days and nights mixed up

It's completely normal for a baby your son's age to sleep that much.. Also, they sleep more right before a big growth spurt or developmental stage as well. I wouldn't worry, let him sleep when he's tired, and enjoy the peace and quiet ;)

I don't remember reading they could sleep to much during the day. I know my little one did sleep a lot in the beginning. If you're really concerned talk to his pediatrician but I cannot imagine there's to much to worry about at this point.

All babies are different, which is something you will see after you have #2. After taking your son to the pediatrician to rule out any illness, just relax and enjoy the quiet time while it lasts!

We have a son, now 11, and a daughter, now 5. Our son went through spurts as a baby at the very same age as your son. He would just sleep and sleep...I would wake him to nurse and he'd fall asleep at the breast way before his feeding should have been over. He would then go through periods of being what the baby books made me think was "normal", then he'd have a spurt of sleeping all the time. I'd want to wake him up and play with him, and all he wanted to do was snooze!

Our daughter was born years later, and I never new how good I had it! She NEVER slept and still, to this day, operates fully on less sleep than any baby book author would ever imagine.

Your baby is an instinctual being. If there is nothing wrong with him according to your pede, let him sleep when he's tired, eat when he's hungry, and be awake when he's bright eyed and bushy tailed. Don't fight it. You'll be much happier!

Enjoy this time. Before you know it, you'll have girls calling your house for him. (Believe me...I know!)

Hugs,

J.

I was in the same boat, and your son is completly normal. My son is now 4 months and has days when he still sleeps quite a bit. My pediatrician told me its completly normal, and to let him sleep. He also said that their alert time should last about 1.5-2 hours when they are that young...after that they get tired, and you don't want him to get overly tired. So...don't worry, his schedule sounds perfectly normal:) Congrats...isn't it AWESOME??

If he wants to sleep....let him! As long as he's sleeping through the night, I don't see any issue. Following a childs natural patterns can only help! He won't sleep too much - and pretty soon you'll be longing for the days when he napped!

He is growing while he sleeps, if he is in a growth spurt he will sleep more. As long as he is still sleeping at night I wouldn't worry about it, he just needs more sleep right now, enjoy it while you can. But if you are worried about it talk with his Doc.
And don’t rely too munch on what the books say. Yes they are helpful, and I’ve read my share plus more, but in the end not all babies are the same and the author never met your baby. You might need to do something that the books say not to, but honey, if it works, it works, who cares what the books say.
Good Luck!

your baby is not sleeping too much. He is sleeping just the right amount. Babies grow when they sleep. A baby his age should only be awake for the maximum of 2 hours before they go down for a nap. If they stay up longer than that they get tired and cranky. Get the book healthy sleep habits happy child.

your child should take 3 naps a day, a morning afternoon and an evening nap.

sleep is good for babies.

Congrats on the baby! Check with your pediatrician, but in my opinion, his schedule sounds perfect for his age. I was in the same boat with my boys. When i asked my pediatrician she said that "2 hours up, 2 hours down" during the day with a longer stretch at overnight was a (loose) schedule i could keep in the back of my mind. And your son is already doing it himself, so it sounds like he is just right! Again, i'd ask your pediatrician his/her thoughts. I always called mine with questions and they always eased my mind. But it sounds like he knows what he needs and the best part is that well rested babies are happy babies!

My son Tanner is 11 months and he still takes two naps a day and he sleeps 12 hours at night. Your baby is the best judge of what he needs, and only two naps a day at 10 weeks seems like he is awake quite a bit for his age. I hope this helps!

Have you discussed his sleeping patterns with his pediatrician? I have an eight month old who also sleeps alot (although not through the night yet). Anyway, in the evening we give her baths to keep her awake for a while. It seems to make her more alert for a little while. Just make sure you feed him first. Otherwise, the warm bath and an immediate feeding will probably just sooth him right back to sleep. We do this hoping she'll sleep better for us during the night if she's up for a while before bed. But it may work for you during the day? Good luck!

He should be awake more during daytime hours vs night time hours. He should still be sleeping alot. Around 4 months he will be awake alittle more. I have a 8 month old who sleeps 11 hours at night, then is up for 2 hour and sleeps for 1 1/2 - 2 hours then goes down about 3 hours later for about another 1-2 hours.
