10 Week Old on Zantac.

My son was prescribed Zantac last week. He spits up slot and occasionally chokes like he cannot breath. His ped suspects acid reflux and prescribed 1.5 ml of Zantac twice a day. After a few days of hesitating the meds I started giving it to him only once a day. I'm not convinced though as he has been quite fussy, gassy and kind of just blah the past couple of days. His gas has been really smelly as well. Anyone have this reaction with Zantac? Any words of wisdom would be lovely.

What can I do next?

Hi P..
All my boys had acid reflux and were on zantac. With the 3rd I discovered a product called ultimate aloe juice. I put them all on this and the acid reflux is gone. I was able to take them all off their meds. If you want the zantac to work you really need to do it twice a day. Only giving it once a day isn't giving him enough and why give him meds that aren't helping. Here's a link below for the ultimate aloe. I reccommend strawberry kiwi because it's sweet and kids like it. This site is offering free shipping this week. Completely safe for baby. My friend had his son on it at 2 months. Just 2 ounces a day will really help.
I hope it helps.

My youngest (8mo) was started on zantac at about 5wks old, we just weaned him off. He did great on it. He was a silent refluxer - never spit up, but was VERY irritable. He seemed gassy (we were guessing belly issues at first just because of the irritableness), but never had gassy issues on zantac. We were told to give it a good 2wks to see if it would work, and it did take about that amt of time for him to stop being so irritable all the time. I don't know how much your son weighs or the concentration of the med, but we started on 0.4ml twice a day, then increased it as he gained weight and was getting irritable again. So, I question the dose he's on, but only because I don't know his weight (your sons) or the concentration of them med like I said. But definitely give it twice a day as ordered for atleast 2wks before saying it's not working. You can still give mylicon or other gas drops if you think he's gassy. And know that zantac will not work immediatly and he needs it as a maintenance med and not just as needed. I would talk with your doc more if you are concerned. They can do a test to check the for reflux & severity of it if you don' twant to try the med first. We opted to try the med as we were pretty sure that was his problem - and it was ;)

I have a now 4 month old that has been on prevacid since 1 months. We started on zantac but it was not strong enough. My son was very spitty and congested and weezy. He ended up with Acid reflux and laryangomalacia which was diagnosed by an ENT. The zantac worked for us for about a month but was switched when we saw the ENT.

My doc said to try to track his fussy times and give him the anti gas meds about an hour before to start breaking up the bubbles before they get to bad. I would also stick to the dose the doc gave you because he is probably only get relief part of the day if you skip a dose and then will get worse because you skipped a dose. I know if I miss a dose for my son he spitts up a lot more and is crappier. I agree it will take 2 weeks to see full effect.

Have they every suggested switching his milk?? If he is just spitty and does not have a sensitivity to milk the Enfamil AR has work great for my son. He went from spitting up everytime he burped and inbetween to a few time a day.

The only other thing I can think up is if he is sensitive to lactose.

Hope this helps. Trust you gut. Mothers intuition is always best.

I didn't have any issues with reflux with my son, but I had a friend who thought she did until she found out that when she eliminated dairy from her diet (so it wasn't in the breast milk) her son no longer was gassy, smelly, and fussy. But for her the spitting up was accompanied by ususual BM as well, so you have to look at the entire set of symptoms. I only bring this up since you mentioned the smelly gas. You know your baby best, and if it doesn't seem like just reflux maybe you should get a second opinion.

We got results with Olux I think was the name. Does his breath smell like metal? If so then you are more than likely looking at reflux ... I would have a swallow study done with a GI and make sure it's not GERD ... simmilar but not the same as Acid Reflux

Hi, P.! My son was on Zantac for about 6 months. I'll just list a few things the doc told us to do, not to do, etc. and other recommendations that worked for us.

Make sure you give him the prescribed dosage. My son was on it 3 times daily and if he even missed one dose, he paid the price for around 24 hours. I also learned to give him the meds 1/2 hour to an hour before feeding him. Seemed to take a little time to work so he would spit up less after eating.

Burp, burp and burp him some more! Seriously, like every half ounce.

Do not lay him down immediately after eating. Keep him upright 1/2 hour to an hour after eating.

Let him sleep in his bouncy chair or even a swing if he's really fussy. When you lay him down the acid comes up into his throat and is really painful. I used to call Jack "my little upright baby". If you held him or kept him sitting up he was perfectly content. The second you laid him flat on his back he would start crying.

Get a sleep wedge or roll up towels and put under his mattress to keep him elevated when he is sleeping.

Don't keep feeding him. Jack would cry his hungry cry after he would spit up his whole bottle and I would think he's hungry, I can't deprive him. The milk feels good going down but then it just mixes with the acid in his tummy and he will throw it back up. It took me a while and the doc telling me a couple times to stop doing this cuz I just couldn't get past thinking he was hungry.

And, last, hang in there Mama. You will get it figured out and get your own routine of what to do and not to do. GL!!!

babies spit up... that is normal due to the sphincter/valve separating the esophagus and stomach being weak and immature. The choking could be aspiration or just your very young baby (mine is 11weeks old) is figuring out how his body works.

Get a 2nd opinion about the reflux, it is HIGHLY over diagnosed.

My daughters both have acid reflux - they take different meds. My oldest, now 12 years old, has taken it since she was 2 months old. It needs to build up in your system for about a week before you see relief - it's not like taking a TUMS - so if you think you are not seeing any relief after a dose it's because it has to build up. He should get both doses - it is based on your weight - and he will outgrow the dose and need it to be increased as he gets older - with my daughter I quickly learned the signs of her outgrowing the dose and would then rush to get the new dose because it would take a week before the new dose would give her relief - and that would be a very long week. Also, my oldest, had BOTH colic and reflux. She was terribly gassy from the colic - cutting out dairy and giving her soy formula really helped her in that area - but she still had the acid reflux. You might want to look into it more - not breathing is a bit scary - I've had that happen to me - and my brother has had it - my throat closes up to keep the acid down - also restricting my airway - it's like having asthma almost - very scary to not be able to breathe. Good luck!

My son was on zantac for refulx as well. He didn't have necessarily the most typical symptoms of reflux, but I trusted his doc and we tried it. He was a different kid - so happy. I say you should give it to your son AS PRESCRIBED (you said you did only once per day - did this mean not what was recommended?) for a week at least and see if it makes a positive difference for him. If not, talk with his doc again. But its important to give it awhile to work and to give it as directed.

It sounds like your son is having difficulty with whatever he is being fed. Is he bottle-fed or breast fed? If he's breast-fed, it's something you are eating. Be sure to eat whole foods found in nature, not highly processed "foods."
