My Daughter is 10 months old and will not fall asleep on her own, I either have to rock her to sleep or lay down in my bed with her until she falls asleep. It is a 30 min to a hr fight, i have tryed to put her in her own bed to fall asleep and all she does is scream. Once she IS asleep it if for the night, i don't have a problem with her waking up. What can i do to make the falling asleep better

What can I do next?

Thanks everyone for the Ideas, we have tryed most of them. We have swaddled her, we have a bedtime routine, she go's to sleep around 9ish, the last thing we haven't tried is the Ferber method, and i think that is are next step.

Do you have a routine? If not, this works well for us :

Dinner, bath, books, nurse,/cuddles bedtime. It doesn't take long and i usually start right at 7:15/ 7:30 for nursing etc. (Dinner is 6 ish ).

Hope this helps! I would just encourage you to keep rocking and soothing your baby. She will soon not need you for this comfort, but enjoy it while it lasts.

Also, infant massage helps and singing softly or even just talking about anything softly. They go to sleep almost instantly. GL

I would just get her to sleep the easiest and smoothest way. That way you can go ahead and get on with stuff and get in bed on time. She will eventually go to sleep on her own. Right now it's a fight that doesn't need to be won or lost.

We used the Ferber method. It worked for us.

Good luck to you and yours,

My daughter was the same at that age. If I left her to try to get her to learn to fall asleep on her own she would get so upset she would start projectile vomiting everywhere. The Dr. said some kids just have a sensitive gag reflex and will do this when crying hard and that they grow out of it. I decided to just not fight the battle and to lie down with her each night. She is 3 now and I still do this...in her bed in her room. She does not nap anymore and she is very quick to fall asleep now so it is not that big of a deal for me to do it. But I worry that she needs to start learning to fall asleep on her own! Her brother was the same way at age 3. He gradually just started being good at going to bed on his own. I can't remember what age but now at age 8 we just say good night to him and he goes up to his room. Sometimes my husband will tuck him in and sit with him for a few minutes, but he does not have to. Anyway, I know this won't last forever but I definitely am not good at the whole sleep training thing. Good luck.

What time are you putting her to bed? If it is too early she may not be tired. If it is too late, you may have missed a window of sleepiness and she is now over tired. At that age my son went to bed when we did (11 pm or so). If he was tired he fell asleep wherever he was. Also having a set bedtime routine may be helpful.

Does she sleep on her tummy?

Once we made sure our daughter was full, diaper changed and placed on her tummy.....she would conk out.

We had soft music playing to drown out the tv or telephone conversations in the other room...

I also have a ten month old and were stuck in the same situation. We're still swaddling and it seems to get him asleep much faster. Then I can at least transition him to his crib with him waking up. At least you get a full night's sleep though. We're still nursing once or twice in the middle of the night!
