10 Month Old - Will Not Sleep at Grandma's House

I have been trying to help my 10 month find a way to sleep at grandma's house when we visit. She seems to miss her crib and even though she is ready to nap in the afternoon. She will fight it and try to keep herself awake by crawling around and getting off the twin mattress (that is on the floor) to explore the room. When I lay her back on the bed she will get upset and throw herself back and cry. I have to lay down with her andsing, pat and rub her back until she falls asleep which can take up to an hour. What should I do to help sooth her to sleep? (Normally, I can just put in her crib and she will fall asleep on her own within 5-10 min with her blankie.)

What can I do next?

Playpen time!

Or... if there's a closet big enough for the mattress... either a babygate... or for $10 you can buy eyelet screws and a big mesh laundry bag and create a babygate. My mum used to do that with us when we were travelling, since she couldn't bring a gate or playpen with her. Baby got a dresser drawer, toddler got the closet crib. Older kids on futons. Just us (littlest one in a backpack) and the dog backpacking/train-treking all over asia.

She sure has you trained. Get a crib at GM's and leave her to work it out there and at home too.

Hey Mama,

This is very common! You child's brain is learning every day, so each new experience is something they need to explore. When she's at Grandma's, she wants to learn more than sleep.

I recommend to families I work with, (I'm a parent coach), to have soft bedtime music for each nap & night time. When you travel, or go to Grandma's, the bedtime musich helps tell your child it's time to sleep, and they go to sleep easier.

Young children need consistancy, so when you can't be at home, using the same bedtime routine & music helps a lot.

Good Luck

Have you tried using a playpen instead of just a mattress? I'd be worried she'd roll off the mattress and hit her head on the hard floor. Not a far fall...but still.

We had the same problem. Grandma did have a travel crib, but our problem was that his room was usually kept pretty dark even in the day time. At Grandmas house, the rooms all have 3 or more large windows and the rooms are well lite during the day. At night there was not a problem, only in the daytime for naps.
