10 Month Old Waking at 4Am

Hi . In the last month my just turned 10 month old son has started waking at around 4am (it ranges between 3.30am and 4.30am so is not a habit time). He will stand up in his crib and shout. To answer the obvious question he is not hungry (he will take some milk if I give him some but equally is happy without it). He clearly is tired and wants to go back to sleep as he yawns and rubs his eyes. After about 30 mins to an hour I can get him to go back to sleep, normally on my shoulder before I lie him down in his crib and then he will sleep through to 6.30am ish (which is a reasonable time!). Other information is that he goes to bed awake at about 7 - 7.30pm and has 8oz of formula before he goes to bed. He has previously slept all the way through the night to 6.30am. Any ideas as I have gone through all logical solutions? Thanks

What can I do next?

could be getting some teeth in or going through a growth spurt. I would give him some baby tylenol and see if it helps. I would see in his mouth if he is getting any more teeth. If he is try some hylands teething tablets. Put on some soothing music for him and see if he can go back to sleep himself. Good luck

I think he's just proud of himself for learning to pull himself up and stand up! I have to disagree with going in his room at all, especially if he isn't even crying. Why are you spending an hour with him getting him to go back to sleep? Ask yourself what you're teaching him. He yells, mommy comes in and coos and snuggles him for as long as he wants. Why wouldn't he want that? If you feel you HAVE to go in, lay him down, pat his back for a minute, shush him, and walk out.

Go in, change his diaper so that's he's not soggy wet and cold, give him a hug as you lay him back down and walk out. Ignore the shouts until 6:30. Put a white noise machine in the hallway so that you can sleep while he's shouting. In a few days he will learn that it's not time to wake up at 4:00.

Hi K., if it is not a habit, it can and probably will quickly become a habit if you go to him, get him home, feed him, if no one goes in he probably will stop waking up or at least stop shouting. J.

Did he just learn to stand up? I noticed that when my kids did new developmental things (like crawling, standing, walking), we had one bad week of sleep. For instance, when they learn to stand, they will stand in the crib and sometimes not know how to sit back down. So it may just last a week.
If it lasts more than a week, you may need to do sleep training again, i.e., letting him cry it out...

I don't know about solution, but he is "practicing" his new skill it should pass on its own.

Could he be teething? Maybe you could put him to bed around 8pm and see if that helps. sometimes we all have periods in our life that we do not sleep so well. The important thing is that you do not ignore him and that you comfort him until he is able to sleep again. Letting him know you are always there builds a strong bond for the future. he depends on you. maybe he is worried about something. yes, children do worry. you could also try letting him cosleep with you when he wakes up. alot of parents do that and have a strong healthy bond with their kids.
