Hi, My daughter still has really bad gas at 10 months! She gets my up several times a night arching and kicking until she farts. B/c I nurse, I've done diet eliminating and found a couple things that make it worse, but am not able to really eliminate it. Has anyone had a child suffer from gas this long? If so, how long did it go on? Anything help? Mylicol was useless in our case. We are using Colic Calm and that helps a lot.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the responses! My daughter and I have been off dairy, corn, and soy for over 6 months. This worked great with my son (now 3) but only takes the edge off my daughter's gas. We don't eat processed foods so I know that no hidden stuff is getting into our diet. She loves the teas (I've tried catnip, peppermint, camomile, and fennel), but there is no notable difference in her gas. My doctor says she doesn't have the symptoms for reflux (I've asked about it twice). I'm lost as to what to try next.

ask your dr. if it could be acid reflux. my almost 8 month old was going through this about a month ago. he would wake up during the night with gas and he would arch his back. i could tell he was hurting but didn't know why. after 3 nights in a row i took him to the dr and he said acid reflux. they put him on zantac and he is fine. hope this helps.

Colic is defined by the rule of threes- Uncontrollable crying that starts at 3 weeks, lasts for more than 3 hours a day, and goes on for at least 3 days a week. Dr's assume it is stomach-related- they really don't know. Colic is infants is generally over by 16 weeks of age. My son had the worst colic (the all day crier) but it was gone by 16 weeks. Is she crying uncontrollably during her gas episodes?
Being that she is 10 months, maybe your daughter has a food intolerance. In that case, you might have your dr recommend an allergist. They can do a skin test to determine if she is allergic to common foods with might be causing her horrible gas.
Good luck!!

I was much more fortunate than you when my daughter had colic. She was only approx. 8 - 9 weeks old when hers stopped. It didn't go away until I stopped taking my prenatal vitamin w/iron (I strictly nurse also). I read in one of my breastfeeding books that the iron in the vitamins can upset their stomachs. It was definitely true in our case. The colic stopped almost immediately when I quit taking it. I tried to go back on the vitamins approx. 1 month later and she immediately had a really fussy day. Since then I haven't gone back to the vitamins and she hasn't had any more episodes. Good luck.

Why aren't you able to eliminate the offending foods? My daughters are allergic to milk & soy & I've eliminated all traces (including "hidden" sources) for 3.5 years.

My son suffered from colic so I know what a hellacious experience colic can be. A doctor of osteopathy (DO) in Chicago cured my son. I heard chiropractors can also. I would go that route. It makes sense to tackle the root cause.

PS. There are no pediatric DO's in SC as far as I know.

My mother is an herbalist/nutritionist and this is what she recommends for colic:
Seed Tea - make from fennel, caraway, anise, or dill seed.
1 Tblsp seeds/8 oz. water
Steep covered for 10 minutes
Add 3 oz. vegetable glycerine. Bottle it.
Dose: 14/ tp 1/2 tsp every 30 minutes if colicky or 15 min. before feeding.

Mother can drink catnip, cinnamon, dill, fennel or lemon balm tea (before nursing). Weak teas could be given to baby by dropperful every 15 minutes.

Personally, if it's only gas, I use chamomile tea - make it weak and give it to my son in a dropper - about 1/2 teaspoon full - and that seems to do the trick. Peppermint is really the best for gas, but it's usually too strong for babies. You might try spearmint - not quite as strong - and just water it down a bit. The advantage with chamomile is that it also makes the baby sleepy!

Hope this helps. God bless.
