10 Month Old Sleeping Issues -Need Advice

My 10 month old daughter was sleeping through the night from 4 months -9 months. She has her 8 front teeth and even when teething there would only be a few nights where she would wake up off and on but then would go right back to sleeping on her normal schedule.

But for a month now she will not go to sleep at either of her 2 naps or at bed time and she's waking at night. She will be yawning, rubbing her eyes and then I lay her down and she tosses, talks, rolls etc. The other night this went on for 3 hours before she finally went to sleep (crying for maybe 15 mins of it). I am at a total loss on what to do. She is missing naps because of this and then is cranky the rest of the day. She also is waking up between 2 and 4 am every morning. She tries to put herself back to sleep for up to 2 hours before crying. One time I even let her cry at that point for an hour and 45 mins which just made it worse. Now I get up, change her, give her a bottle and she takes about 30 minutes but goes back to sleep.

Our "normal" routine before this was wake between 5:30 and 6am, nap 1 at 8am, nap 2 around 1pm, bedtime routine starts at 6:30 and bed at 7pm.

I am wondering if she's getting molars maybe? But if so I don;t want to have to medicate with baby advil her everytime I put her down. Someone mentioned it may be a growth spurt or developmental change but it's been over a month now. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

We used Ferber, it worked for us.

Sounds like you've been observing her rhythms closely for a while now, so you would be ahead of the game should you decide to go the Feber route because you know what her current baseline is.

Good luck to you and yours,

So hard when sleep gets interrupted, but I agree with last momma...it may be time to drop the morning nap. Mine did this too and once we cut down to one nap, we were back into our night routine. Good luck.

She is actually waking at night, around 4am for a feeding and then sleeping until 7:30 ish. So maybe 1 nap?

This was my daughter to a "t" last month. I know this sounds wierd but is she starting to walk? or crusing around yet? When babies are about to hit a big milestone that is all they think about so it make sense that she can't sleep if all she can do is think about walking. Her body and mind are working so hard on mastering walking that they regress on things they had already mastered such as sleeping through the night and taking naps. I think a lot of people just assume that sleepless nights are teething or molars but truthfully MOST (not all) babies are not phased by teeth coming in and if they are it is only a couple days of real discomfort so if she has been this way for a month now I would rule out molars. Plus 10 months is a little young yet for molars...not impossible but still. Hang in there. This is just one of those things that babies go through the first year of life that we have no control over. Maybe help her practice her walking skills, buy her some walking shoes or a walking toy. Most important thing is to keep her on her schedule even if she doesn't want to follow it right now because that is going to be her only comfort in this new venture. Good luck :)

Yes, could be teething, but I would definitely take away the second nap, maybe put her down at 10:00am. It will pass and she will eventually sleep through the night again. It is inevitable. Sounds like you are doing the right things, but maybe skip the bottle or switch it to water instead of milk.
hopefully that would work. Good luck!

Babies do sleep less when they are learning new things - they want to be up to practice. But most likely you need to adjust the naps. As the babies get older, they stay awake more - even if they look like they are tired, they will stay awake. We had to go to one nap at a year old and it had to be early enough or my son wouldn't go to sleep at night. By about 2 years he stopped taking naps altogether. Maybe move the 8 AM nap to 10 AM and skip the afternoon nap and see how that goes. If that doesn't work, adjust it as you need to until you get it where it is working. Good luck!

One thing to consider is that she may be ready to drop the morning nap? I know it seems early, but both of our children dropped their morning naps before 1 year. Their afternoon naps became a little longer as a result (wake up around 5:30-6:00 am, lunch at 11:00, nap at noon to about 3, then bedtime by 7:30), but it made life much easier once we stopped trying to get them to take the morning nap and they transitioned into their "toddler" routine.
