10 Month Old - How to Introduce "Finger Foods"

Our 10 month old daughter will gnaw on a few cheerios, but we haven't really put finger food down for her. Now purees, that's a different story... she has had every veggie at the grocery store! Broccoli, cauliflower, green and yellow beans, peas, zucchini, yellow squash, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, sweet potatoes, turnips, parsnips, carrots, yellow beats... sheesh. Everything. We puree her food. But as far as finger foods go.... I have to admit, I'm scared! I don't know how much she will eat, and if she doesn't eat, do I offer puree? Which are good ones to try at this point? And she only has 2 teeth, won't that make a difference in how much she chews??

What can I do next?

I started with graham crackers, gerber puffs, cheerios, biter biscuits, whole wheat bagels. I was just very vigilant while they were trying these for the first time. As they got the hang of that, I pretty much stopped doing baby food of any kinds. That's when they switched from a high chair to a booster seat. I sat down next to them at the table, prepared a larger than normal plate of food for myself (all safe for their age and chewing/swallowing ability) and began placing small amounts of food in front of them. When that food was gone, I added more.

She can pretty much eat whatever you're eating, as long as it's not honey or shell fish (or any that I've forgotten about that you're supposed to wait on) and not something she can choke on.

Just put it in front of her and see what she does. If she's definitely not interested, she'll let you know. Then you can back off and try again later. Good luck, and have fun!

Just start slowly, giving her little pieces of whatever you are eating, along with her purees. Small pieces of shredded chicken, chopped veggies, pasta, small pieces of meatballs, small pieces of soft fruit like banana, avocado, etc.... How many teeth doesn't really matter, they mash food up with gums anyways. She will learn how to move things around her mouth and get the hang of it. Have fun!

My LO 10 month old only has two teeth as well, but he eats just about everything. I think his fav thing is dill pickle spears and pasta. Don't be scared just start slowly with a few pieces and work your way up.

I have the same question. My son is also 10 months. And only has 2 teeth as well. I tried giving him melon and he almost choked both times. So I think I might wait until he at least gets his upper teeth. I do give him puffs and cheerios and that works fine.

I just answered this question for my niece - she was totally freaked out about what to give her 10 month old. I told her to relax, don't be "skeered", it's not rocket science, just give her what you eat only cut up really tiny. Well, we just celebrated Finley's 1st birthday and it was obvious her mom "rocked" it over the past 2 months - her mom put EVERYTHING on her plate and I fed her and she ate the WHOLE thing! Pasta salad, chicken, fruit, cheese, everything! I was so impressed! I also have the list I received from the pediatrician which I also follow with each baby. At 9 months old they suggest finger foods such as: banana, cooked veggies (if you already do these as purees just make them a little more chuncky), teething biscuits, crackers like Ritz, strips of soft cheese (like American), Cheerios, Gerber Graduates, Puffs, yogurt. It did stress not to do: honey, cow's milk, peanut butter or eggs until a year old. Also avoid anything that would be a choking hazard like: nuts, popcorn, raw veggies, gum and hot dogs. I would also peel grapes and cut them up tiny. And about the teeth - they can "gum" stuff pretty good if it is cut small enough or "pre-smooshed"! Don't worry about that. Good luck!

Since she only has two teeth you are still pretty limited. It all has to be something that easily dissolves at this point.

Gerber has yogurt meltaways & flavored puffs that also melt. My twins are 9 1/2months and they love both of those ( and they both just have 2 bottome front teeth)

Just watch her closely, go slow, and don't freak out and stick your finger in her mouth the instant she coughs. Let her figure it out.

I've also been known to pre-chew some things a bit for my little ones - meat, and harder fruit like apples. Sorta gross, I know, but I don't drool all over it or anything. :) Moms have been doing that for babies since Clan of the Cave Bear, it's easy, and it works.

My 7 month old only has two teeth, but he can manage most 'allowed' foods, with a little help. He loves pasta!

A great website to help you is wholesomebabyfood.com. You can always do small bits of banana, pancake, blueberry halves, cooked carrot pieces, etc. You would be suprised how well those gums will chew!
