10 Month Old Eating

Ok, I'll apologize in advance for asking a gross question. In my defense, it's about a baby and babies are known to be gross. :) I just want to know how much of the table food you feed a baby (10 mnths old in my case) is actually digested. When I change my daughter's diapers after a BM I can actually see pieces of the food I fed her. Is she properly digesting? Has anyone else noticed this or should I call the pediatrician?

What can I do next?

Since babies digestive systems are still growing...there will be times when especially hard to digest foods will show up barely broken down in stool. Don't worry this is normal. I have a 27 month old and am 8 weeks from having my second, so I am trying to refresh my memory on newborn info. Good luck!

Let me tell you something, I have a 6 month old that just started eating level 2 foods. His bowel movement looks really different the first night that he actually got something that was not complete mush. I called and had his doctor pages at like 11 at night. It is probley fine but call the doctor if it makes you feel better. It is always better safe than sorry. And that is what they are there for.

I'm not sure if this is true, but I've been told that it's caused because the baby isn't chewing yet or not chewing enough. Personally I've never had this problem because my son started chewing as soon as he got teeth, but my overbearing grandmother was all over me about making sure to watch his diaper for lumps of food because she thought I should process everything before giving it to him.

my daughter is almost 2 and you will notice from time to time that the food is the BM......Just make sure that you cut up all potential choking hazard foods ie..hot dogs and stuff like that. watch her when she eats and see if she is actually chewing her food or if she is just swallowing.... I don't think you need to see a doctor. She is still learning how to eat solids

Hope this helps a little

We would need to know if it is all food or specifically what food you are talking about. In my experience, the only food I have seen this happen with is blueberries, corn and peas. If this is occuring after the same foods time after time, no problem. If it is everything, might what to read more about it and ask your doctor.

LOL .. don't worry .. Moms have seen it all. What goes in .. comes out .. It is fine as long as she is not having tough time during bm, and it is not happening with all the foods all the time. -- She is possibly gulping small pieces and not chewing, which is fine. Some babies do not chew or do not have teeth to chew. Even different colors are fine (Green, Orange .. ) depending upon what she ate: Spinach/Carrot ..

if she is happy and eating .. everything is good.

lol! this made me smile. i remember being where you are now. don't worry about it, that is very normal. our bodies digest different foods in different ways. some of the "pieces" that you are finding just aren't able to be broken down by the digestion process. as she gets older, it will get better. but, even as adults our bodies have a hard time breaking down certain foods..like corn or some nuts for example. if you feel really concerned then ask your pediatrician, don't feel silly. trust me they have heard it all and it is always better to ask than to worry about it. good luck!

I'm pretty sure it's perfectly normal. It has to do with their inability to chew thoroughly which is due to having few teeth. I've seen many a swim diaper explode in the pool in which every piece of food was identifiable. Nothing beats corn chunks floating by! (How's that for gross!!!)
