10-Month-old Has Skin Irritation

I noticed some red spots (bumps and dry patches) on my son's back (lower back and sides). He occasionally develops small red marks on his skin (mild irritation I suspect) and they seem to disappear within a day or so. This has been getting worse gradually over the past couple of weeks. It does not seem to bother him and the redness becomes more visible after he's in the water, after bath-time. I hope it is not an allergic reaction to something, there are no allergies on either side of the family. I am taking him to the pediatrician this Friday, but was wondering if anyone had any ideas what it may be or suggestions about making it go away.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for all the helpful advice. I took my son to an allergist to get tested for dairy allergiest. This was my main concern because he is getting ready to transition from bm to regular milk. In addition to dairy, he was tested for allergies to soy, wheat, eggs, dust, and mold. He is not allergic to any of the foods, but did react to mold and dust. The allergist also gave us several different creams to try, to determine which works best. We've tested 2 of them so far for about 5 days and both seemed to have cleared up his eczema. We will stop the Rx cream and try one of the OTC creams that several of you have recommended (Cetaphil, Gentle Naturals). Hopefully it will remain under control. We are also working on reducing dust and mold in the house and baby's room.

Possibly eczema. If so, dr. Kalik has my son on a good regimen. Bathe with cetaphil gentle skin cleanser, dermasmoothe oil after bath (prescription), then apply vanicream lotion(over the counter) or apply epiceram lotion (prescription).

I'll pass along the same advice to you that our pediatrician gave to us - see a dermatologist.

Our daughter was around the same age when she began to have a similar presentation of rash on her skin (back, shoulders, knees). We took her to the pediatrician, and he said that so many different derm issues can present similarly that he preferred us going to a dermatologist for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

The dermatologist said it was eczema, and we've been using Vanicream (OTC lotion you can have any store order for you - the big tub in the picture is ~$10 http://www.psico.com/) nightly after baths to control it along with occasional hydrocortisone.

At their age, it could be anything, so I'd rather have a confirmed diagnosis from an expert than to guess and treat for something else unknowingly. Good luck.

Hi M.. First of all, don't worry. What comes, goes very fast with kids.
Some thoughts: It sounds as if the bumps occur possibly near the diaper line? COuld the diaper be chafing him? Did you start using a new diaper or cream????And/or, you can try not using soap or bubble bath in the bath. Try using a mild cleanser like cetaphil. Also, try washing his tushy with water and cetaphil every time he makes a BM.

Could be eczema. My son had it too. Don't use Elidel, as it has side effects that could harm their reproductive health and other things!!! Make sure you use an organic baby wash and shampoo. You may be surprised to learn that most store brands have formaldehyde in them! It's usually listed as Quaternium-15, which is a formaldehyde releaser.

I used to use Huggies Baby Wash lavender scent until I learned how bad it was. My son's rash on his face went away shortly after I stopped using it.

Good luck!

Hi M.,
Could be a reaction to the soap.. Have learned of the many harmful ingredients in our everyday household products (soap, lotion, laundry detergent, shampoo, cleaners, etc). There is a simple, safe and effective way to replace these products at a BIG cost savings...

I could share this with you and I think it will make a big difference with your son's skin irritation.

The skin is the first place that you can see dysfunction within the body. He is allergic to foods no doubt. At 10 months this could be milk products, grains, egg, vaccines, and others. Visit NAET.com and find a practitioner near you. Get rid of his allergies before the become behavioral/developmental/medical issues in the future.

It does sound like eczema. Try putting hydrocortisone on it twice a day. If it clears up, it was probably eczema. For eczema in the long run, be sure that you keep the skin hydrated with a really good lotion. My whole family uses Renew lotion and the eczema has cleared up.

Sounds like eczema...try "Gentle Naturals" Baby Eczema Cream...you can find it in the baby shampoos, lotions, and diaper rash ointments aisle at Wal-Mart and Target.

My son has eczema, and this is the ONLY OTC lotion that doesn't burn him, and offers relief.

M.,

check into food allergies/ sensitivities, which typically express themselves as skin issues. the bath may be exacerbating the issue. also some aveeno oatmeal bath oil may help.

good luck....A.
