1 Yr Old Flip Flops All Night....

My one year old son who just recently started sleeping through the night has difficulty sleeping. He flip flops and changes position for an hour during the night. He is asleep while doing it, but he is constantly trying to find a good position. He naps just fine, it's just during his nighttime sleep that this happens. Any suggestions on improving his sleep?

What can I do next?

It could be the mattress. My daughter (who is now 2-1/2) started that restless flip flopping too and I felt that it was her crib mattress making her uncomfortable. It was a FIRM mattress. So we decided to move her to a big girl bed. We got her a twin set and she moved to it with no problems and seems to sleep very well now.

My son, now 8 yrs old, did the same thing. As long as your child seems rested in the morning, I would not worry about it. I tell ya though, he no longer slept in my bed after a nightmare when he started doing that flipping and flopping all night. I would just stay in his room until he felt safe or was back to sleep. My daughter, age 5 yrs, does not flip as much but can give you a good hitting with her arms at night..whew!

my daughter started flip flopping at lot at night. It started all of a sudden, but i felt it was her mattress as her toddler bed was using a crib mattress and those are not very comfortable. We moved her to a big girl bed, with regular mattresses and that solved our problem immediately.

If he seems to be well-rested, then I wouldn't worry about it. Babies and toddlers are much more active in their sleep than adults.

I think it's probably normal if he's well rested... like the other posters said.

Just wanted to add my now 17 year old was very restless and always tired and after a sleep study we found he had restless leg syndrome and that he was going into a wakeful state 20 times or more an hour. He takes meds now and it's better but the RLS bothers his all day long. He paces to keep his legs from bugging him.

My 13 mo. old son also moves a lot in his sleep. He's never in the same position the next time I check on him. He seems to get enough rest. My DH and I both move a lot, too, though. I think some people, even babies, just move a lot. As long as he seems to get enough rest and isn't always cranky/tired, I wouldn't worry too much.

When my daughter turned one she did the same thing. I resolved that by increasing her evening activities, for example going for a walk. We would walk half a block and come back home, that would take about 30 mins, she needed to stop and inspect EVEERYTHING, that seemed to do the trick for her.

Both my boys 9 1/2 & 6 still do that. For that matter I do too. They sleep thru it too. But you may have the Dr. check out his tonciles. My youngest still filp flops but was worst before we had his tonciles taken out. We found out they were way to large and he was having a difficult time breathing.

Good luck!

I just assumed this was normal -and part of the reason we still have them in their cribs at this age! My son turned 1 this month, and he does the same thing. We put him down in one position, and he's completely turned 180 degrees when we look at the monitor before we got to bed. My thought is that if it doesn't wake him and he seems rested in the morning, then it's not a big problem.

Sorry I can't be more help, but just know that their are other kids the same age doing it too!

Children review their day as they sleep. It's possible your son just has a very active memory of what happened during the day.

Try putting him to bed just 20 minutes earlier than his regular bed time. let me know how that works for you.

That's just how babies sleep! As long as he's not waking himself up, I wouldn't worry about it. Be sure not to have pillows or blankets in the crib that he could get tangled in.

What makes you think he isn't getting a good night's sleep? Is he more tired than usual during the day? My one year old is so noisy at night, we have to turn the baby moniter way down so we aren't disturbed. He tosses and turns and makes little noises, but seems well rested every morning and naps reguarly. Maybe your son is just an "active" sleeper like ours.
