1 Year Old Having Diarrhea/teething Issues

My one year old son has been having diarrhea/loose stools with some "blowouts" for the past couple of weeks. I thought it was related to him teething (he currently has six teeth, but one or two more teeth are coming in), but now I'm not sure. He's currently on whole milk with a couple of scoops of formula mixed in as I am slowly transitioning him to just milk (with no formula). Has anyone else had this issue with diarrhea while teething?

What can I do next?

did he have the blowouts after starting the milk? If not I think it could be viral- we are getting a lot of calls at the peds office- a lot of rotavirus's going around. avoid foods- cause loser bms- which is anything with a P. try foods that are binding. applesauce, pasta, potatoes etc.. also many babys have a loose bms- to much dairy. only 4 servings a day is needed. Good luck!!

OMG-- I AM HAVING FLASH BACKS TO BLOW OUTS! Our daughter who is now 7 had terrible diarrhea when she was teething. All that extra saliva just went into her tummy and out the back end. It was disgusting. So, yes we had those issues.
One thing though that makes me wonder if it's all teething is the milk thing...are you mixing the formula powder with water before you are putting it with the milk or are you stirring the powder into the milk? If you aren't mixing the formula per package directions first and then combining it with the milk it could be too rich for his tummy and causing the blow outs. Try changing that up and maybe it will help....good luck!

Are you adding enough water to the formula when you combine it with the milk? I think when you add formula to milk without adding water it's a high concentration of protein and decreased amounts of water, which can strain kidney function and digestion.

On the other hand, my son is now 15 months old and is having loose stools and I think it's due to teething (he has 14 teeth!)

I would stop adding formula to his milk. Whole milk may also be to hard for him to digest. My son never drank whole milk. Our doctor said that children get enough milk fats in other foods they don't need any more fat. And it is harder for some children to digest because there is so much cream in whole milk. Our son has always drank skim milk and is now 17 years old and still drinks 3 gallons of milk a week. He has never had problem digesting milk.

Just a Thought...

I would stop mixing the scoops with the milk. I think this is causing tummy upset. teething can certainly seem to cause diarrhea as they swallow the excess saliva too.

Ask your pediatrician on how you should transition him over to whole milk. My doc said make a clean break, though due to his lactose intolerance issues (he was on soy) she said to start with Lactaid and that worked very well for us. If he is on a milk based formula, there honestly shouldn't be any issues with your transition... at least, minimal issues.
